Some exciting results from Gliese 1132 b. Even if this is inconclusive, it suggests a great possibility for firmer data when the JWST takes a look a couple of years from now. FYI, Gliese 1132 b is estimated to have earthlike size and bulk composition, but at a distance from its star to receive far more radiative heating than Venus. |

So readily finding an Earth-like, tidally locked planet, with a robust atmosphere, in orbit of an M dwarf star, appears to indicate that these are common. It's often been suspected that such planets would quickly loose their atmospheres to stellar erosion. In that M class stars make up a large portion of the stars in our galaxy, this discovery seems to greatly enhance the possibilities for life therein. |
