Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Image Processing Techniques _ How can I remove checkered effects from galaxy images (allWISE)

Posted by: ncc1701d Sep 7 2017, 10:44 PM

Hello All,
I uploaded image here of allWISE (Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) image of galaxy from Aladdin 9.0 software. You can get at Skyview Virtual Observatory as well and other places to.
Does anyone know what the method is for removing the checkered tiling effect?
Are their any publically available tools or tutorials on how to eliminate that effect?
I have noticed it on other galaxy images taken by other spacecraft as well.
I have seen images where the effect is removed so I know it can be done just not sure if I have to have a PHD in math or own a super computer in order to remove the effect.
thanks

You certainly don't need a supercomputer. You'll need some kind of dividing by the flat field, possibly with prior dark current subtraction.
I think, that http://wise2.ipac.caltech.edu/docs/release/allsky/expsup/sec4_4a.html provides most of the detail. I'd say, that most of the applied math is undergraduate level.
Might be, that there already exist reduced versions of your image of choice, but I've no specific knowledge.
