I think those are the marks left by the drill's pre-load support posts. In the earlier tests only up to three "points" were seen for each post but presumably the drill's vibration (and perhaps higher pre-load forces than before?) has left nice "constellations" of marks. I've spent some more looks on the subject - and yes, you are competely right ! The marks are not caused by the ChemCam. The support posts made it. Cheers, Udo |

ADMIN: Moved to this thread. Note that a parts of the internet has been shaky since 'Sandy' and intermittent issues and website re-routing is being experienced worldwide. (This shouldn't go in the map thread!) Exploratorium was updated late yesterday - check these pics: Maybe you're seeing cached pages? Sorry, I wasn't aware of the wrong thread. Since a couple of days the connection to qt.exploratorium.edu isn't reliable from Germany, maybe from Europe. Lot's of packet misses during an active session, see the pings from my side: Ping wird ausgeführt für qt.exploratorium.edu [207.7.144.15] mit 32 Bytes Daten: Antwort von 207.7.144.15: Bytes=32 Zeit=273ms TTL=53 Antwort von 207.7.144.15: Bytes=32 Zeit=266ms TTL=53 Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung. Antwort von 207.7.144.15: Bytes=32 Zeit=269ms TTL=53 This happens only for the exploratorium website ! For the site is hosted in San Francisco it can't be an effect of storm Sandy. Is this probably a more general problem ? Regards, Udo Update: My packets are routed through White Plains (New York) ! Therfore it might be a result of the probems they have in New York after Sandy ... |

My take of the Sol 64 video about the 1st probe's sample release of the CHIMRA: 16MB enlarged version 5MB enlarged version The animated gif consists of the first 130 images of the 255 image sequence until the sample release which is shown in time lapse. Earthlike colours and displayed with 10 fps. Enjoy, Udo |

It's astonishing for me how fast the data are accessible on earth. It's now 4:40 pm for Curiosity on Mars and the sol 60 images are on earth since a couple of (earth) hours now. When exactly happens the afternoon Odyssey pass at the landing area ? Awesome ! Cheers, Udo |

CO2 won't be a liquid at normal conditions due to the 5.1 bar triple point. This is the reason why dry ice sublimates directly to gaseous CO2. There would be no liquid phase in between. The phase transition would happen from D to F as well. Udo |

For instance, if the glass was sitting on black sand dunes (albedo .05) the infrared warmth ( dune temp could easily be 35-40c) might warm the ice water quickly enough for it to begin boiling before it completely evaporates The phase transition under the conditions mentioned would happen directly from ice to gas. It evaporates. There would be no boiling at all. At 40c a liquid phase is impossible at 6-10 mbar air pressure. In my above phase diagram the phase transition would happen from point D to F. No liquid phase at all. Udo |

Liquid water is almost impossible under the current conditions: The enclosed phase diagrams of water and carbon dioxid state clearly that the triple point of H2O is around 6 mbar and 0 deg Celsius, while for CO2 it is 5.1 bar (not mbar !) and -56.5 deg Celsius. This means: below 0 deg Celsius water is solid (ice) at 6 mbar and CO2 is a gas. At 7 deg Celsius as on sol 52 and 6.9 mbar air pressure water theoretically could be a liquid but it is most probably a gas. And CO2 is a gas always. Cheers, Udo |

I am surprised that they did not do a ChemCam raster scan of Hottah. Maybe they could get have gotten lucky and flashed off some of the cementing mineral. I'm surprised as well why we bypassed Hottah without any further examination. Instead we are looking 2-3 weeks now at Glenelg for a suitable place to drill for a SAM probe. why that ? Cheers, Udo |
