That video is really good! Does it appear that the actual landing (from the moment the dust starts flying) has been sped up?

It really looks sped up just before landing. Maybe interpolating the dust movement between frames was just too hard, maybe impossible. But it's the best I've seen yet.

I think that's probably why. When I did something similar (although not nearly as spectacular), that was one of the things that interpolation really messed up. And unlike the heatshield drop, this is something that can't be rotoscoped either.

Ok, I'm going back to the drawing board to make a 60fps at Super HD!!!.... laugh.gif

At the end of the Canning video as the camera elevates to take in "Mt. Sharp" it appears that the mountain is dwarfed by the crater wall behind it.

I think this is an error - is it possible that the mountain's profile appears twice, at two different scales? The wall itself may in fact be a bit higher, but it's also twice as far away.
This causes me some minor discomfiture because it disrupts my favorite part of the video - the first moment of absolute silence, and then the robot doing just what you or I would do; looking around to get its bearings. The collapsing of the timescale between actual landing and actual looking around is justifiable for dramatic effect, but there's no similar reason for the terrain scaling not to correspond to what's actually there.

When I was a kid reading "Sands of Mars", I dreamed of what it might be like to do a landing like that myself one day. Of course I was underestimating both the technical and the social challenges, but I must admit that, watching this video, I feel not too terribly cheated by the real events as they have unfolded. It simply did not occur to me that I would grow an extended nervous system and new sensory organs to experience things like this with a very high degree of fidelity, even without leaving the Earth's surface.

What do you mean? It's just the MastCam mosaic from Bradbury landing. Nothing looks out of place.

Looks to me like an incomplete job of manually filling in the sky in that corner.

Wow - a load of fuss over a bit of photoshop in half a second of video.

Is there much else to discuss until every MARDI frame of landing is down, ready to be assembled into a 'final cut' (whenever that is)?

Every MARDI frame of landing IS down. How do you think he made that video, or indeed the versions that JPL have released?

Well, the one from August 23rd on the MSL website (and Youtube channel) is captioned as "most of the high-resolution frames", that's in addition to everything we've seen in this thread, and the MC sync version. Since there's nothing newer there, I assumed that suitzoot was working with the same raws.

<ADMIN mode>

To a whole bunch of previous posts:

One day there will be a definitive version of the MARDI images and MSL's landing - maybe from NASA/JPL or someone who gets asked to do it officially.

Until then, deep breath...enjoy the variety and creativity of the versions appearing here in this thread and elsewhere...do a bit of research...read up what you can...and if you have the software and desire, make your own versions.

Hopefully we'll get even better materials to work from in the future from the PDS.

</ADMIN mode>

Just enjoy it smile.gif

Are you sure? I can't seem to get the ones in the late 800's and 900's - plus a few random frames before 500 or so.

ADMIN HAT ON:
To All,
Despite his place of work, Doug is not the font of all knowledge when it comes to missions, images releases etc.

It goes without saying that if the images are not on the JPL/MSL and related websites or through any of the highly useful 'image downloaders' that members have prepared, then they are NOT on the ground and are either still on the rover or the orbiters, or the image pipeline is stuck somehow, or any one of a number of other reasons.

We are not going to go around in circles on this. FULL STOP!

Sorry if this comes across as a bit strong, but really, there's zero need to ask these questions or query someone else's comments.
The information is all online and just a few minutes of research will provide the answer.
If you find the answer, then contribute that as your next post. This is what UMSF is all about - "adding value to the discussion".
