What would a DS2 impact site be expected to look like? Would there be a crater big enough to be visible to the MGS MOC?
I recall seeing photos of inert military penetrators (no explosive filler) impact sites. They were of a much longer length to width aspect ratio, but they did not make much of a crater, just a hole in the ground about the diameter of the impactor with some uplifting of the hole edges. Probably <1m across. |

Give that Beagle 2 was expected to create a crater ejecta of ( if you read the B2 reports ) up to 7m across I think - that sort of figure. DS2 being so small - I'd be suprised if it could be anything more than about 2m - so truth be told, in terms of MOC imagery - you'd never be able to seperate it out from the background to be honest.

Perhaps soemone else recalls follow-up work done recently by NASA on the Deep Space 2 Penetrator design. If memory serves, then I believe that this work was done to qualify the design, taking into consideration the criticisms listed by the Investigative Board. However, I have searched the Internet for information on this DS-2 follow-up and have come up dry. As I recall, it was low-profile and low-cost, but was intended to reduce the technical risk of the design for future missions. Another Phil Here I am replying to myself, as I have found the DS-2 Follow-On Report. It was done about 3 years ago and here is the link to the work that JPL did to validate its design principles. http://extenv.jpl.nasa.gov/presentations/DS2-Follow.pdf Another Phil |
