So the SW development is ahead of schedule? I think with MER they wrote most of the software when the spacecraft were already in space smile.gif

The article states that the lowlevel part of the radar testing has been done, this was for high level to the start of low level, with differing I guess swing angles that might occur.

So the SW development is ahead of schedule?
ahead of schedule ???
Radar was tested on F/A-18 in 2008, then on helicopter in 2010.
I assumed this kind of SW+HW fine tuning was finished one year ago.

Just to give you one analogy - engineering model MER airbags were still being tested AFTER the launch of Spirit and Opportunity.

Full inline quote removed - Admin.

I am curious, apart from maybe changing the inflation pressure, what the purpose of that ?

Exactly why? Don't know.

A quick google finds this:

https://imageserv5.team-logic.com/mediaLibr...Exploration.pdf

Mentions Dec 2003 as the final test.

"Full system inflation testing was completed
successfully in December 2003. Desired pressure
profiles were achieved and deployment occurred
with no damage to the airbag assembly."

It makes you wonder when they were glad there was no damage on inflation...........

If I had to venture a guess on the MER airbag tests, I'd say there was still a wide range of EDL attitude options available to them during cruise, likely related to potential late changes in the chosen landing ellipse. Those kinds of changes would affect the physics (velocities, Gs, and other stresses) at the lower end of the descent and landing thereby affecting the forces encountered by the airbags. By getting in those tests after launch, the data acquired would have helped to clarify the widest possible range of EDL variations available to them late in the game should some kind of alteration become necessary

A change in stance from 'it's good enough' to 'just how good is it?' - and with Spirit, TIRS/DIMES doing its thing, we probably benefited from that.
