Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Spirit _ Spirit is Sleep Roving

Posted by: Astro0 Sep 29 2008, 06:41 AM

There's a bunch of stuff that's come down from Spirit on '2008-09-22' that looks as if she's clearing some very old images from the flash memory. There are Pancam and Navcam images that are quite beautiful, including this one which I think is from somwhere near the summit of Husband Hill.

Jump on over to the Spirit images at Exploratorium and take a look. I'd love to see some of these images processed in colour.

Shhhh....don't wake her while she's dreaming of 'Times from Roving Past' smile.gif

Astro0, that was one of the coolest posts I've seen...
Somehow made me think about when my dog fells asleep, entering Dogdreamland territory and I stare at her imagining with what might she be dreaming...
Now that our eyes are set at Meridiani it is so cool to think about Spirit that way (yeah I'm antropomorphizing the plucky one, so what?), dreaming with all her past adventures and, by looking at those images I can't avoid to think what a harsh, although wonderful, life our rover at Gusev had so far... smile.gif

Spirit's 'sleep roving' again smile.gif

http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/pancam/2009-01-14/ and http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/navcam/2009-01-14/ images going back to Sols in the mid 500s to late 800s.
Some real gems in there.
I love this image from Sol 620 on Husband Hill(?) looking out towards the rim of Gusev.

Also, a nice DD from Sol 580 - 1.2mb animated http://astro0.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/dd_sol580a.gif

Hundreds of shots - take a look.

Those images are wonderful - did someone activate Spirit's secret Greatest Hits Mode?

Some nice odd-shaped rocks hiding in those "sleeping" images...

Those look like Pot-o-Gold style "rotten" rocks that have eroded from the inside out, leaving the armored shells behind.

I'm also amazed at so much of the old imagery. I've sometimes thought that, after the sad day that we last hear from the rovers, we could start a thread that relives the missions at one sol per day. Don't know if it could be sustained for several years, though! And maybe we'll be lucky and MSL will be roving by then anyway...

We can do that right now, through the eyes of a rover driver in the http://marsandme.blogspot.com/ Up to sol 12 and I have a feeling there's trouble ahead. ohmy.gif

Stu, Where was your post#5 taken. Sure looks like a place where gasses are venting.

Ah, surely nothing can go wrong, the rover and its software are all performing a 100 percent well! :-O

This is like watching a recorded football game, and somebody has told you the final score.

Unless of course, maybe it will turn out differently this time. Maybe we're all in an episode of The Twilight Zone: The Low Budget Remake (financed by the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit). Doo-doo, doo-doo,... ph34r.gif
