Sol 2547: The final leg has finally started.
Here's the "big picture" covering the path from Santa Maria to Cape York which I will use as route map to cover this last segment on the trek from Victoria to Endeavour. As usual, I will be posting "crops" of this map (and a KML file too) after driving sols and the big map from time to time. Route_Map_Sol2547.kml ( 75.43K ) Number of downloads: 492 PS: This update is purely based on the "telemetry" from the rover. The exploratorium is still missing the latest pictures. |

Hmm. Either one of the drivers had his/her map upside down, or, as an early April Fool's joke, someone swapped their keyboard for an Etch-a-Sketch when they weren't looking...

THAT's interesting. Perhaps the move was to aquire long-baseline stereo views of Santa Maria? Can't see any compelling terrain-avoidance rationale.

Step 1: Get away from Santa Maria. Step 2: Approach "Rodrigo de Escobar".
That's what it looks like, anyway. |

I guess the question is: why get away from SM directly east? It sure does look strange. One idea would be that the 2547 and 2549 positions could form a large baseline for stereo imaging of the route ahead. Although now that we're off the rim of SM, the view SE has got to be pretty poor.

someone swapped their keyboard for an Etch-a-Sketch when they weren't looking... The "S" and the "E" are right next to each other on a standard keyboard. The Rover Driver might have glanced up at a television to watch the latest news on Charlie Sheen just as he/she was entering the letter for "drive direction." -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.

The direct view towards Rodrigo de Escobar may have been obstructed. The view was clear towards the SE from the last stop on the rim: http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all...JOP1757R0M1.JPG If there was something about the rim of SM to the SE that they wanted to avoid, they could've gone a bit east then SE. The drive-direction pancams were looking more or less east, so it clearly wasn't an error. Maybe something caught their eyes to the east that they wanted to do drive-by imaging of. Edit: in case someone didn't see it, Maxwell confirms that imaging and "craters and junk" determined the decision to drive east. |

With the exploratorium back up and running I could finally put my hands on the pictures and "refine" the plots for sols 2547 and 2549. Here's an updated map, including sol 2551 too. The next upcoming drive is today and we might probably cross the 27km mark.

27kms! That's 45 times the 600metre prime mission goal. Wow! Keep on trekkin'
