Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Forum News _ Fall 2013 UMSF fund drive

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 12 2013, 09:22 PM

Hey all, it's that time of year again. It costs us $2000 a year for our speedy and reliable server and hosting, funds that we raise through an annual drive in the fall. http://planetary.org/support-umsf Donations are tax-deductible in the U.S.

Any funds raised over and above the $2000 goal for UMSF hosting will support our continuing project to build up and enhance our http://www.planetary.org/explore/space-topics/space-imaging/amateur.html, which now contains nearly 800 images. We recently renamed the Planetary Society's image database for one of our cofounders, http://www.planetary.org/about/our-founders/bruce-murray.html, who died this year. The http://www.planetary.org/multimedia/space-images/ incorporates our amateur image database as well as professionally produced images.

Please help us keep UMSF going! Thanks in advance for your support.

I rarely post here but I do lurk here frequently. And I like this site a lot. So I gave $25 USD.

Posted by: Explorer1 Nov 13 2013, 06:19 AM

I've been lurking since practically the start, and this wonderful place deserves all the support it can get. I'll pay up my dues by the end of the week (just a student with two jobs, but this will be worth it!) Always had excuses the previous years....

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 13 2013, 11:34 PM

Thank you all! We have $220 after the first day. $1780 to go...

Posted by: nprev Nov 14 2013, 07:45 AM

Right on!!!

Special bonus offer: If we exceed our goal by 50% or more I will change my icon to something incredibly personally embarrassing (no, not in THAT way...get your minds out of the gutter, dammit!!!) for a period of two weeks, during which time I will expect unceasing mockery.

Of course, my ultimate objective is to, y'know, kill all humans anyhow so it's alright for you meat bags to have some fun at the expense of my magnificence. It will make no difference in your fate...MUWAA-HA-HAAAA!!! wink.gif

But Bender, not the same pink tutu as you wore in previous year, please! laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

$50 <ka-ching!>

Posted by: nprev Nov 14 2013, 09:20 AM

Thanks, Pospa! smile.gif

No, mercifully not; that was disapproved by the admin/mod team. There are still new frontiers of humiliation to be explored!!!

Posted by: Ant103 Nov 14 2013, 07:16 PM

Done smile.gif You got 15$ from France smile.gif

Long life to UMSF !!

Posted by: climber Nov 14 2013, 07:43 PM

Another one from France...

Posted by: Tom Dahl Nov 16 2013, 12:44 AM

FYI I have not had any luck being able to load the donation web page for the last hour or so. Hopefully a temporary issue.

EDIT: wouldn't you know, a few minutes later the page finally popped up!

Posted by: Explorer1 Nov 16 2013, 04:13 AM

Gave 15! It took me long enough!
An extra few quarters in Canadian, but eh, whatever!

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 16 2013, 06:02 AM

OK, we're up to $435. Thanks for your support so far. $1565 to go. Every little bit helps.

Posted by: nprev Nov 16 2013, 03:53 PM

<cha-ching!> $50 from the stingy robot. I was hoping for a lot more; that lady's purse looked expensive.

Posted by: brellis Nov 16 2013, 09:24 PM

$20 - and I renewed my PS membership thru the next election cycle, lol

Posted by: dvandorn Nov 17 2013, 04:42 AM

And it's $50 from me. Hope we push over the goal.

It told me that my contribution was designated to amateur imaging. I'm assuming it went to the right place.

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 17 2013, 05:29 AM

Yes, that's correct -- it's all part of the same project. The annual drive here pays hosting costs first and if I raise anything extra it supports our work on the amateur imaging database to organize the image products that people produce here.

We are at $670.

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 21 2013, 05:02 PM

Woohoo! We have just passed the $1000 mark! Halfway there! Thanks to all who have donated to keep this place going. $995 to go....

Posted by: Malmer Nov 22 2013, 03:26 PM

I will not fail because of me.

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 25 2013, 09:49 PM

Wow, you guys really came through over the weekend! We're at $1615 -- not much farther to go. $385 left. Can we get there before Thanksgiving?

Posted by: Bjorn Jonsson Nov 26 2013, 12:14 AM

I had almost forgotten about this. I just donated $25 - now it's too late for me to forget about this ;-).

Posted by: PDP8E Nov 26 2013, 05:05 AM

I think we are so close to the goal.

I ask all continuing members and lurkers to do what whatever you can do ( even $1 by 6000+ members is astounding)

I am already in.

I will match between now and Thanksgiving (11/28) up to $100 for all who will donate just $1

( you give $1 and so will I ... Emily and crew at Planetary Society will let me know)

FOV, That's a wonderful first post. Welcome to UMSF!

Posted by: nprev Nov 28 2013, 07:46 AM

Thanks for all the donations from all of YOU!!! smile.gif

Don't forget: If we exceed our goal by 50% or more (which would be $3K), I will defile my august, dignified UMSF avatar for a period of not less than two weeks. Hilarity will ensue!!!

Posted by: elakdawalla Nov 28 2013, 03:42 PM

We are at $2370 now smile.gif Thanks all for your support. Anything we get now supports the image archive -- and dancin' Bender.

Posted by: Ron Hobbs Nov 28 2013, 06:16 PM

I'm in ... for the dancin' Bender.

Oh the pretty pictures are great, too! You all keep up the good work. And Thank You for letting me ride along on this great adventure.

I feel a sense of impending doom.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO <gasp!> OOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!........

Posted by: elakdawalla Dec 3 2013, 09:07 PM

We're at $2440 now. I'm satisfied -- thanks all for your support for this place for another year.

Posted by: Astro0 Dec 3 2013, 10:28 PM

No, keep going everyone! We need to see the rust bucket robot dance laugh.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: ngunn Dec 3 2013, 11:03 PM

Whilst I'm a keen supporter of the space images archive I think the fact that additional contributions now will not pay directly to this forum may cause a slowdown. I would suggest that in future after the initial target is reached the receipts be split 50-50 between the space images project and 'money in the bank' for UMSF.

Posted by: elakdawalla Dec 3 2013, 11:07 PM

There's not really any point in keeping money in the bank, unless I want to try to push for two years worth of funding at once. I don't see a need to do that. So I let the fundraising go past the goal as far as it seems to want to go. The fact of the matter is that the fundraiser never closes -- people can, and do, donate year-round. We're actually doing a major fundraiser among members right now to support the newly renamed http://www.planetary.org/multimedia/space-images/ (which has new search features, if you haven't checked it out yet), and I know some members of UMSF have already donated to that so I'm not surprised it tailed off when it did.

Posted by: nprev Dec 5 2013, 01:45 PM

So it looks like the tutu goes back into the closet for another year (sorry Astro0!)

Regardless, OUTSTANDING job everyone, and thanks so much for generously supporting our community!!! smile.gif

Posted by: Holder of the Two Leashes Dec 6 2013, 02:53 PM

Sorry I was late with my donation this year. Been busy lately running around southern Europe. So it's all going to the image library now? Good enough.

Posted by: stevesliva Dec 26 2013, 08:16 PM

A quick mention since there's a promo going right now that might make TPS a quick $5:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1001922881

smile.amazon.com is a new doorway site that funnels small amounts of the revenue from your amazon purchases to your preferred charity. I mention it here because The Planetary Society is one of the charities.

Happy holidays everyone!

Posted by: dvandorn Dec 26 2013, 10:39 PM

And, of course, you can always respond to Bill Nye, who is sending out requests to everyone who gave money during our fund drive to give more money...

-the other Doug

Posted by: stevesliva Dec 26 2013, 11:44 PM

Yes, clearly this is not the most direct contribution, and involves actually giving money to amazon, whatever you may think of that whole process. There a lot of backstory with Amazon being flinty in the past and probably all sort of other discussion, but that's moot as far as I'm concerned, because I was going to buy that kindle book anyways, and if it helps TPS, so much the better.
