Phoenix Mosaic: 9 Jun 2008 Cover for Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine
Pay Dirt: Phoenix Hits its Icy Target
For this thrilling and superb science mission to the Martian arctic, we (mars loon and dilo) are pleased and humbled to present a simple false color mosaic we constructed of a Phoenix footpad and the "snow queen" feature uncovered during landing.
The mosaic is featured as part of the Phoenix cover package for the new 9 June 2008 issue of AWST magazine

Phoenix Imagery Reveals North Polar Plain
By Craig Covault
The Phoenix lander sits near the North Pole of Mars directly on top of exposed water ice that it was prepared to dig for weeks to find. The mission goal is to unravel the mysteries of what may be preserved inside the ice and surrounding soil. ....

Our tribute to honor the fantastic efforts of the brilliant Phoenix Team !
led by Scientific Principal Investigator Peter Smith at the University of Arizona
Here is the cover and mosaic:
Oh my God! If ever I've seen an image that convinces me that the Universe is not hostile to life, but that it is out there in abundance -- this is it. Congratulations on your fabulous work.
BIG congratulations, you guys!!! AW&ST definitely needs to put the genius imagesmiths of UMSF on the permanent payroll!!!
Congratulations mars loon and dilo!
BIG congratulations you two, superb picture, well-deserved recognition for your efforts!
Outstanding!
I'll admit my personal biases upfront, and I will not be holding my breath for an announcement, but that image and headline should be nominated for a Pulitzer prize. Very nice work, as usual.
It is an OUTSTANDING image. Sums up so much in one shot. Congrats to you both!
Congratulations! That image is breathtaking.
Congratulations Ken and Marco! Great work!
Another one for the collection Good work guys!
Doug
+1!
Great It's always a pleasure to se members of UMSF congrats like this .
Thanks all for kind comments!
Frankly, when I received the mosaic from Ken and sent it back after some processing, it was only a raw image for preview and I planned to make a better version. However, Ken and Craig liked immediately the result and I was too busy to work on, so this became the definitive version. Indeed, it seems is not so bad, based on reactions!
So thanks to Ken for his usual strong effort in terms of initial work and coordination/PR, and obviously thanks to Phoenix team!
PS: Ant103, your avatar is genial (at the beginning I thought it was a visualization bug!)
we had to complete extremely quick to achieve deadline.
The Phoenix Team appreciates all the efforts here.
Thanks to all for your generous comments !
Superb work... it wouldn't look bad on the cover another spaceflight magazine we all cherish
Congratulations!
I can tell you that Dr. Keller was very pleased with this cover.
A very beautiful scene you guys pulled out of those images! Bravo!
Nico
Congratulations on making both AWST and APOD!!
I am making a thread with all the images UMSF'ers have gotten into major printed publications and APOD: http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.php?showtopic=5235
- Could you guys maybe help me out, so we get a comprehensive list of images in the thread? Maybe there are some Cassini images by UMSF'ers as well, that I don't know about?
Thanks!
Sweet, our chief Mission Scientist actually used this image in the latest Phoenix conference...

...as you & Loon properly should be!
Wow, a "thank you" note from the PI is about as good as it gets! Congrats to you both from me, too.
