I've always been curious what their image set list looks like. Your #2 and #4 frames look pretty remarkable and probably would largely pass unnoticed at a cursory glance.

I hadn't heard that limitation of LORRI before. Is that due to a memory buffer limitation?

Same here. Interferometers offer the best ROI for visual observations. One change to their proposal I always wished for was the capability to add more telescopes to the constellation in the future. And also a pre-planned robotic servicing craft that could be sent to refuel them. One can only dream I suppose.

Emily, I notice in the final image on your page, your thumbnail label says "no blue" but the registered label for the raw says it is an RGB capture - unless I'm reading the label wrong. Good resource as always, nonetheless.

mcaplinger: Not complaining that the data is challenging, just time consuming. Also, I already hammered out several scripts to cut the time down significantly. Most certainly a necessity if you plan to do more than a few of these.

Hadn't realized how the data was be distributed until today. Had a go at one of the images. Workflow seems quite long on assembling these. Have I missed a tool that makes this easier?

Not getting my hopes up for TMT anymore. While only a little over half the light gathering ability, the Giant Magellan is trucking right along though and is supposed to be done in less than 5 years from now.

You're best bet might be to start emailing people. I've contacted Ed Bell, curator at the NSSDC for various things when I was heavily into doing research for Wikipedia articles. Not that it's guarenteed to be in any of these but I did a lot of footwork in tracking down resources for historic NASA information and have a big list on my wikipedia user page that may be of help. Many of the links may have gone dark though - its been 6 years since I worked on that.

Haven't used this process for a while but here is a blink animation I did a long while back for sub-pixeling an image of Occator in Survey Orbit.

The image is blinking between the original cropped view from Survey Orbit #16, the sub-pixeling version and finally Occator in LAMO. The final LAMO image has been skewed because the original image of SO was somewhat oblique in view.



I'm rather intrigured so many details seem to remain consistent while others seem present but shifted due to the nature of the original low resolution.

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but thought I post a teaser of what I've been working on.



The atmospheric glow is a composite from the MVIC look back and the color for the terrain has been morphed tirelessly from the global MVIC image with further color enhancements to bring out details better. Interesting to note, I didn't realize the MVIC crescent image actually captured much of the alpine terrain on Pluto. Its exceptionally difficult to see but at the far left of the image, a slight red band gives indication to the location of the mountains. This red band travels north to south on the eastern edge of the mountains.

Also, in the final version, this will be animated from the global view to the crescent at 3420x1460 if I can find a proper host for 4K video content. Working on the very edge of the crescent is tedious but its the last area to work on.

As far as I know, this is the current best map available. Its missing the other half of the imaged regions and is only a composition of the red and blue channels from MVIC though.

Yeah, that dot is the correct scale - 2 pixels is approximately 35 meters with the 200% increase in my context image.

Was certainly thinking that as well Gladstoner. There is several very peculiar spots that look like very quick or non-viscous material moved quickly to fill the lower crater and surrounding area.

That type of orange coloration has been linked to areas with the highest concentrations of detectable water. It seems like that would hold true here as well, with the impact exposing the lower water layer.

Now, why high concentrations of water appear as orange is likely due to it being mixed with tholin producing compounds but how this process evolved on a place like Pluto is a little beyond my own reading. Also, at a more technical level, I think that it wouldn't appear as orange if you were to capture the same region with a digital camera with a bayer filter.
