Opportunity drove to some hematite rich soil on Sunday and took this microscopic image. Looks a lot like the other soil, the biggest difference I see is the very large irregular shaped grain.
(click for larger image) I think the following image from the navcam gives a good perspective on the size of the crater. It drove to the backside of the lander. You can see the rear petal that they pushed into the ground. You can also see the short tire tracks to the outcrop. The lander is in about the exact center of the crater. (click for larger image) |
