QUOTE (atomoid @ Jan 19 2006, 11:18 PM) I've yet to spot any image looking back to Ultreya (ok uh, "El Dorado" it is) from recent positions. I'm hoping to spot what lies above the area Spirit traversed since that was hidden behind the slope of the dunefield. Maybe weve already images the area but the filter/exposures werent right to get the black dunes iwth any contrast, or maybe we just havent had a good look at the area yet. I'm thinking by now we should have been able to get a good view of El Dorado in its entirety, but still no pics... You know, it's sad the way that the colonialisers apply their own names to places which have had perfectly good native names since the year dot.com. Here we are, native Martians to a man (Emily, you're a man if you're a Martian, we have but one gender, more's the pity!) and we know that the dang thing is called Ultreya Abyss. Then the boy racers from Earth (p'tah!) come along with their beach buggy, and suddenly good ol' Ultreya is El Dorado. Makesyersickdunnit! "You mean the Roosevelt Canal, don't you?" "Tirra. The old Martian name." "But on the map-" "Forget the map. It's Tirra now. Now I found a place in the Pillan Mountains-" "You mean the Rockefeller Range," said Bittering. "I mean the Pillan Mountains," said Sam. "Yes," said Bittering, buried in the hot, swarming air. "The Pillan Mountains." (from Ray Bradbury, Dark They Were, and Golden-eyed) |

QUOTE (Tesheiner @ Jan 19 2006, 10:39 PM) Seems that it would be possible to have a glimpse of El Dorado not only from Home Plate but from another place (see yellow arrows on the picture below) which I think is in the planned route. Unless I miss my guess, this shows a large portion of it: -------------------- My Grandpa goes to Mars every day and all I get are these lousy T-shirts!

...and finally the left top of Ultreya-dorado
http://mars.lyle.org/imagery/2N191964216EF...25L0M1.JPG.html i guess thats all she wrote. I'm still wondering why the boundary areas are so tight, especially at the top where youd think stuff would come down in more varied places based on prevailng wind velocities, which shoudl tend to produce a much more blended boundary. I'd expected to see soem indication of slope change at the boudary but it looks very smooth. It seems Ultreya hasnt lost all its mystery. |

Not to mention that it is a rule of survival for spelunkers, but that's an easy one for all to forget, as we excitedly rush into the future. Good point. -------------------- ...Tom
