Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ MSL _ Damaged "hose" above wheel?

Posted by: Tom O'Reilly Oct 18 2020, 05:37 PM

Sol 901 (February 17 2015) panorama appears to show what looks like a disconnect "hose" above the forward starboard wheel.
Does anyone know what this "hose" is and if it is actually damaged?

It's a bad seam in the mosaic (images aligned to make the soil seam perfect, breaking the cable above it). If you look at the https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw-images/?order=sol+desc%2Cinstrument_sort+asc%2Csample_type_sort+asc%2C+date_taken+desc&per_page=50&page=0&mission=msl&begin_sol=901&end_sol=901&af=MAST_LEFT%7CMAST_RIGHT%2C%2C from that sol it's not there.

Yup - here's one image showing the cable is absolutely fine.

BTW, the "hose" is a Kapton-wrapped cable bundle.

The shadow exposure, orientation and placement of the stitch seam to the small rock quite effectively tricks the mind into perceiving frayed ends of a severed cable wrapper, thats really an incredibly effective piece of random mimicry there!
