QUOTE (djellison @ Apr 24 2024, 06:20 AM) *
The creation of those mosaics hasn’t been changed. They are still being generated. The web changes are entirely external to the mission team and we have no say over them.
If people have thoughts regarding the new webpage designs and content (or lack thereof) I would encourage you to use the feedback forms / contact us pages etc etc.
Personally I find the wholesale deletion of historic mission websites like Pathfinder to be utterly inexcusable.

Thanks a lot Doug.

Yes indeed this is inexcusable if it was really deleted: the MpF website is part of NASA's history, this mission having paved the way for the following Mars missions at JPL, for engineering, science and Internet issues.
This MpF website should have been considered as an US National Landmark just for the history of the Internet alone as the Press stated then: "Mars Landing Signals Defining Moment for Web Use".

But, thanks to IKI, which was then JPL's partner for the Internet mirror site in Russia, the whole MpF site is still viewable at:
http://www.iki.rssi.ru/mpfmirror/default.html

QUOTE (Phil Stooke @ Apr 18 2024, 08:12 PM) *
I think there always was a NASA website and A JPL website for each mission, with the JPL site being the best for users like many of us. I hope that the JPL site is down for an update and will come back. Phil

Thank you Phil.

I'm afraid that there will be no longer two sites for each mission: these new ones include features from the old JPL sites such as the whole "raw images" sections.

==>> However, good news: the maps are back! smile.gif

Dear All,
As you may have noticed yesterday, there was a major update on both Curiosity and Perseverance NASA websites which share now the same visual architecture.
==>> However and maybe I'm wrong, but the "Where is Curiosity ?" and "Where is Perseverance ?" online maps have disappeared! unsure.gif
Has anyone found them elsewhere ? blink.gif
Thank so much for your kind answers: those maps are really good and useful educational tools (and even for the Press).

I will not dare compare this work to the exellent panoramas that Neville Thompson kindly offer us every day, but here are those made for Sols 1041 and 1045 with their 3D versions.
Those rocky buttes deserve being seen in 3D.
Enjoy smile.gif

That sequence was shot at around 11:00 local time, so broad daylight. The bright pixels are hot pixels.
You can also tell by zooming into the image because these bright spots are basically just single pixels. Any real point source would always be imaged as at least a few pixels (the "point spread function").
You can see the local time (LMST) of those MSL pics here:
http://lcdm.ca/msl/4106/index.2.html
(And latest images here: http://lcdm.ca/msl/)

Thanks Fredk (and also for the links) smile.gif

Sol 4106: the Curiosity rover took a series of pictures showing the Martian sky.
At the top of all the images it looks like the same stars.
Or maybe that they are bad pixels?
An opinion?

I plan to start volume 2 of the Martian Panoramics to include the Mars 2020 missions Perseverance, InSight and Zhurong. I am asking for your opinion on the subject to know if it would really be worth it to pursue these projects?

Congratulations Gilles for this good job of yours.
Yes, it’s worth it: but it’s going to be a huge task.
Summarizing a mission Sol by Sol is a tedious work and I have already experienced it many times.
Have courage! smile.gif

Bravo Gilles pour tout ce que vous faites.
Oui, ça vaut le coup : mais cela va être un gros travail.
Résumer Sol par Sol une mission est fastidieux et je l'ai déjà maintes fois vécu.
Courage ! smile.gif

I just completed a 21-minute video describing the Viking '75 Mars lander's two SNAP-19 Viking Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) in detail. The video illustrates the RTGs using a high-fidelity 3D digital model that is a work-in-progress hobby effort of mine (for the past ten years, as of this month), see earlier replies in this topic. The WIP digital model is freely available in SketchUp format via DropBox as a 386MB SKP format file.
I forgot to mention back in July that a few years ago I created a short video about the lander's legs, which mention those so-called load limiters.

Dear Tom.
What an amazing work! smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
Congratulations: thanks to you, I'm travelling back in time.
With best regards,
Olivier

Dear Nprev,
Thank you for keeping us informed of some of your forecoming decisions.
I read all the posts with the good ideas.
As a Charter member of The Planetary Society, having witnessed most of its developments since its beginnings, and if I may suggest,
I would really keep the name "UMSF".
Over all those past years, UMSF became a worldwide 'brand', known for its community having a lot of experience and known also by planetary exploration specialists.
With best regards,
Olivier

Considering the low sensitivity of navcam I'm thinking it was more likely a glancing cosmic ray hit.

Thank you for your nice explanation.
What hinted for me as being a meteor, is that when you transform the image, the incoming trail becomes more apparent (see here below)
