For the mathematically challenged, such as myself, could someone please post the exact time when Spirit enters Sol 1000. My feeble calculations place the moment on the evening of Wednesday next, October 25th., at either 1845 or 2345 GMT, depending on whether you add or subtract the extra 40 minutes a day to get Earth time. A Duff beer for anyone who can coach us dunces on this one!

According to Midnight Mars Browser....

The flick from 999 to 1000 will be 00:44 UT on Thursday October 26th for Spirit

02:16 UT on Thursday November 16th for Opportunity. (I think - there's a daylight saving time shift between the two annivs)

If I have my math right, that works out to 7:44 pm Central Daylight Time on Wednesday, October 25 for us here on the other side of the pond...

How did you do that? Reset your system clock? Or is there a bell&whistle I missed in MMB?

MMB might be a minute or two off either way, but that should be approximately correct... Would be interesting to hear a more 'official' S1K time.

I was also looking for independent verification and had forgotten about Mars24. I am comfortable seeing that they agree. Curiously, the macromedia flash clock at the rover's home page indicates a time about 19 minutes earlier. That clock has always been off from others, but it does make one wonder what the corect time on Mars is.

It is interesting where the internet will lead one with a little time on his hands. I came across this article: http://marsrovers.nasa.gov/spotlight/spirit/a3_20040108.html. I wouldn't be surprised if it has been mentioned previously in this forum.

I'd like to get one of those. smile.gif I am still digging, but I think this is the guy's web site: http://www.executivejewelers.com/

Talking about differences between Day and Sol mars.gif , a Sol is longer by 39.59 minutes.
10/26/06 - 01/03/04 = 1027 Days
There will be 1027 Days when Spirit will be 1000 Sols
39.59 x 1027 = 40658.93 minutes = 677.6488 hours (=28.23537 days)
She'll celebrate her 1.5 "Martian years Birthday" on October 29th (this week) and by the time we'll celebrate her 3rd "Earth years birthday" (Jan 3rd 07), she'll have loosen a month worth of sun rises! smile.gif as compared to us.

hmm it's only off by a day, it would have been nice if 1026 sols = 1000 days exactly, then we could have celebrated S1K on the same day on earth and mars.

climber: I am sorry, but if you were explaining why there is a 19-20 minute difference between the Mars24 applet/MMB times and the macromedia flash clock on the MER page, I am afraid I do not understand. All of the clocks divide a sol into 24 major time units, so I would think that they should agree. It seems that everyone here has accepted the Mars24/MMB time, and I have, too. But I find it curious that the Official MER site clocks are giving different times. If I am missing soemthing obvious, someone please, give me a clue.

So are we celebrating the start of the 1000th sol or when 1000 sols have passed since the landing?

Given the complexity of time zones etc etc - I think the answer will be 'all of the above'

Isn't that partly reliant on whether a Sol starts at sun-up or local midnight? Hmmm...which is it?

Andy, off to fix me Sol calculator.

CosmicRocker, I didn't try to explain anything actualy blink.gif . I added 39.59 mn at every DAY since landing and came up with the figure above. The purpose was not to show the exact time when Spirit will turn 1000 (as you said Mars24/MMB time do it right); I was more looking for the day it'll occur as well as the days differences between Earth and Mars since Spirit landing.
