The MastCam took an image of one of the scoop trenches on SOL 93
The focus was slightly off (??) I ran it through an adaptive Lucy Richardson (deconvolution) program Zelenyikot: wow, very nice flickers! It seems that a large 'pebble' in the middle of the trench just disappears? Is that due to sublimation... a watery clod? Or did Curiosity alter the trench? In any, case very nice! -------------------- CLA CLL

It doesn't disappear, it appears! It falls off the wall of the pit and into the hole.

This looks like the CheMin inlet port; do the SAM ports look the same?

fredk, yeah, I just tried. This two co....... just couldn't resist - I've just re-read The Ethical Engineer (Analog 1960-ish), & lo and behold here is a long lost baseplate for a Caroj engine - I think I should slide quietly back behind the curtains for another year P.S. I look forward to when MSL will hit the road. It seems to have all the Rocknest investigated What a cornucopia we are having. Mike |

Neat! I especially like the three parallel tracks in the dust at lower right made by larger clods being blown across the deck by the wind.

Very interesting. I'm surprised the martian wind is able to move around the large clods just to the right of the door. It looks like all the particle movement was from lower right to upper left. What wind direction is that? Does the direction and required speed jive with the meteo data? If not maybe a dust devil is responsible?
Or could vibrations induced by all the moving parts in the sampling system cause the particles to slid downhill - if the rover is on a slope. |

The small slope there is: http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...st&p=192812
But possible actions of a wind are appreciable and earlier. On sol 78 the position of a rover didn't change, but a vector of movement of grains of sand another. -------------------- My blog on Patreon

Mars Odyssey is back in business after its computer swap, so there may be more downlink from both rovers now. For Curiosity, SAM is a big energy user, so everything else slows down while it's being used. But when we get past the next SAM analysis, we may start seeing preparations for driving again, fairly soon.

I think he means another portion of the fifth scoop will be analyzed, not a new scoop taken.
