Fantastic piece of writing Emily! I second that . You give us a lot of informations. The only thing we miss now are pictures of the actual rover since she seams to be already pretty advanced. PS : People working on MSL probably are boosted by this decision. -------------------- |

Grrrr, the promised streaming http://www.nasa.gov/newsaudio is not working. Can someone with a NASA PAO contact ask them if they were aware of this problem? I really really don't want to miss the Hubble briefing on Tuesday. |

Grrrr, the promised streaming http://www.nasa.gov/newsaudio is not working. It worked for me, using Firefox and RealPlayer. At first, I got some 'not found' message, but after a minute it started working. |

It worked for me, using Firefox and RealPlayer. At first, I got some 'not found' message, but after a minute it started working. I used FF & RP and it did not work, the same setup that heard every other conference I tried in the past, so clearly something was wrong on NASA's side. FF/IE has no bearing - it's RP that gave the error. |

Thanks for this link. I'm a bit surprised that raiding JUNO or the GRAIL/LADEE Moon missions are on the table to cover the existing overrun. |

I'm a bit surprised that raiding JUNO or the GRAIL/LADEE Moon missions are on the table to cover the existing overrun. Maybe the decision was made by working out which option would p*** off the smallest number of people. I guess there are lots of guys riding the MSL train. |

Alan Stern's thoughts on the MSL budget problems have been posted at http://futureplanets.blogspot.com/ From Stern's article: "When the National Research Council's Planetary Science Decadal Survey recommended the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission for priority funding, it assigned a cost level of $650 million." Feel free to read this report: http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10898 and decide if it was ever intended to be the basis of real funding plans. IMHO it is disingenuous to cite the report for this purpose. Note that the report was written in 2003, well in advance of any MER results and long prior to the payload suite of MSL being selected. I don't even see where MSL was assigned "medium mission" status. The report explicitly assigns "large mission" (>$650M) for "preparation for Mars Sample Return". -------------------- Disclaimer: This post is based on public information only.
