Oh, while I am posting again, don't expect much of a move from Opportunity when she moves to investigate that outcrop.

Oh! I would expect a *huge* move from Opportunity to investigate outcrops in Gusev. smile.gif

Is Spirit doing some solar observing?

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all...0P2600L8M1.HTML

Could anyone elucidate me on the meaning of "filter 8"? A Coronado? A mylar?

L8 ( and R8 ) are Solar filters - and those images are taken for two reasons
http://www.ominous-valve.com/pancam.html

1) To locate the sun, so they can use onboard maths to locate the Earth

2) To measure the sky opacity - how dirty the air is

When do the days start to get longer in Gusev again? I think I remember hearing that it would be sometime in mid to late August, is this correct?

Thanks,

Kung

Can't quite remember....there are graphs around that highlight the details.

Oh my gosh. I can't tell you how many times I've made that mistake, but you probably already know. wink.gif

8\9 th of august - Sol 923 for Spirit Sol 903 for Opportunity.

The longer days will almost certainly not result in an immediate increase in power - the constant deposition of fine dust will continue to degrade net power output until the amount of sunlight begins to increase at a faster rate than dust deposition. That will happen sometime around September 12th (Sol 958) for Spirit. For Opportunity that happens later at around October 12 (Sol 966). The difference between the two is a result of their different latitudes - the rate of change in daily insolation is much faster at Gusev.

Without a cleaning event of some sort both rovers will remain very tightly constrained from a power perspective (<<400 watt hour/sol) until Feb\March of 2007. By that stage a cleaning event could reasonably restore power generation on both rovers to the 600/650 watt hour per sol range.

Isn't this our second winter at Gusev? Why didn't we hibernate last winter?

We did -- we just were higher up, on the side of Husband Hill, and since we were on a north-facing slope anywhere we moved, we moved around a little more. But we stayed put, pretty much, on the side of the hill throughout the winter months. And didn't do a whole lot.

The biggest difference between this winter and last is the bum wheel. It prevented Spirit from reaching the broad, north-facing slopes of McCool Hill where Spirit could have continued exploring, albeit slowly, as it did on Husband Hill last winter.

Looking at Helvick's Power Chart (HPC) it seems as though w/ dust accumulation and insolation (w/o slope) Spirit should be nearing its lowest point in terms of watt hrs/sol in the next 2-3 weeks. I seem to recall 300 watt hrs as 'rover death' on HPC. Are there any more recent power data available? I'm talking actual values, not theoretical.

Any suggestions on where to look?

The latest Spirit update from JPL:
http://marsrover.nasa.gov/mission/status_s...All.html#sol889

It says that Spirit is down to 290 Whr unsure.gif

Ouch!

From Spirit Updates

June 21: (sols 867-873): 310 watt hrs/sol)
June 23: Battery heaters on.
July 6 (sols 881-888): 300 watt hrs/sol)
July 7 (sols 889-896): 290 watt hrs/sol)

In the August 3, '04 update (sol 204) watt hrs were 288/sol and in the HPC thread Helvick referred to this condition as "dangerously low". Has anything changed since then by way of power management that would make the present situation any less "dangerous"?

250 is the figure at which they'd have to do nothing but survive as I understand it.
