On Sol 156 for Spirit, a beautiful 20 frame (10x2) pano was taken. L7's were chronologically taken first, followed by the L2 and L5 frames. Unfortuntely, although the L2 and L5's line up with each other, they do not line up with the L7's. It is as if the pancam mast turned a slight bit (~ 60 pixels horizontally out of 1024) to the left in each frame. Anyone have any ideas why they would do something like this intentionally? I've never seen a misalignment between frames of a pano in the 6 months since the mission has been active, so I wonder why something like this would start now.
timestamp of images in question are 1402xxxxx L7's : http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/pancam/2004-06-11/ L2, L5's : http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/pancam/2004-06-12/ |

So does this mean you're unable to create the color pictures because of the misalignment or is it simply just a great deal more hassle?

Well - they WERE taken in the same time frame - so it should be possible to do a mosaic FIRST, then merge the three channels for colour
I might try it at some point Doug |
