BBC 9/5/06:
"Aye to the telescope" "The [BBC] Magazine's search for Britain's greatest unsung landmark is over. The thousands of votes have been counted and Jodrell Bank in Cheshire is the winner." [snip] "[T]he telescope was one of the first scientific sites in the world to truly engage with the general public. It is currently waiting for funding so it can build a new multimillion pound visitors' centre. " Much more info: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/5314172.stm -------------------- "After having some business dealings with men, I am occasionally chagrined,
and feel as if I had done some wrong, and it is hard to forget the ugly circumstance. I see that such intercourse long continued would make one thoroughly prosaic, hard, and coarse. But the longest intercourse with Nature, though in her rudest moods, does not thus harden and make coarse. A hard, sensible man whom we liken to a rock is indeed much harder than a rock. From hard, coarse, insensible men with whom I have no sympathy, I go to commune with the rocks, whose hearts are comparatively soft." - Henry David Thoreau, November 15, 1853 |

disclaimer : I was born in Chester, a few miles from Jodrell Bank
I voted for this - the other's on offer were all well and good - but JB is an astonishing place - bigger even than the large DSN assets Doug |

I remember the first time I visited the VLA in New Mexico. The wide-open spaces
and long driving distances warped perspectives a bit, so when we first saw the VLA in the distance, they actually seemed much closer and therefore smaller and less impressive than I thought. But as we got closer, I realized just how wrong that first impression was. 27 huge white radio antennae spread out across the desert. No wonder Hollywood goes to the VLA when they want those “cool” astronomers at work shots ala 2010 and Contact. http://www.bizjournals.com/albuquerque/sto.../21/focus2.html -------------------- "After having some business dealings with men, I am occasionally chagrined,
