Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Forum News _ 2000 Sols : Two posters

"Hang on lads....I've got an idea"

It's been a while since we gave some tactile kudos to the rover teams both in Cornell and in JPL, the 1st Birthday card's are a distant memory now smile.gif A while back, I made some basic photo-mosaics of some MER scenes just for fun. Some worked. Some didn't. But I thought that a cumulative 2000 sols would be worth marking in some way, and so I set about trying to put together something for each side of the the US to mark the occasion. I'm not going to share these in full resolution - because then they could be reproduced...and these are both one offs, never to be reproduced.

Jim Bell over on the East coast handled things for me - hiding an A1 poster away until conjunction started so today I'll share what I sent that way......and on Monday I'll share what went west....

Attached - a browse size to see the full effect and a crop from the full resolution to give you an idea of what it's actually like. This was sent to Cornell about a month ago, as an A1 poster, as a thank you for the hours, the effort and the images smile.gif

GREAT work Doug, a very fitting tribute to the men, women and machines behind and involved in this incredible adventure.

I fear I might go blind tho if I stare at that mosaic too long.... huh.gif

Realy Great idea and Great realisation. Both Mer team and USMF team deserve a celebration this way. I'm glad YOU get this idea, Doug. smile.gif . Will be very apreciated, I'm sure.

Great realisation indeed !

And right now ( for the next 12 minutes ) the cumulative sol total is infact...2000 sols. Just mindblowing....

I'll be celebrating 2001 cumulative sols tomorrow hopefully...but you'll just have to wait for that one smile.gif It'll be different, and you'll like it biggrin.gif

This poster was, like the pancam one, Printed at A1 size, but was sent over to the west coast team at JPL, for the building the girls, and looking after them for so long! This one didn't work quite as well as the other...but if you know your rovers, you'll know what it is smile.gif

Did you check when they will be 2000 sols over garenty ?
Well, it'll work better if you're in Hawaii than in Europe, and if you rounded it up (a little bit) it'll be exactely 3 years after you opened up UMSF! smile.gif (which BTW is also my Birthday... wink.gif )

Note : they'll have cumulated 3 Martian years in two more days from now : nov 8th 2006

Doug,
I really really really really really wish you would consider letting The Planetary Society make proper posters of these so I could put them up on my Mars wall. Pretty pretty pretty please? Would you take bribes? smile.gif

Well - those two posters are intentionally not to be reproduced. John Callas asked if both teams could have both posters, so I sorted out very high res images so they could do that - but that's it..... I made them for the two teams (and the words in Emily's blog from yesterday are very very true and from the heart ) - and they're not going to be done for anyone else.

BUT....

I've thought about doing a third in the series that would be for everyone - and indeed I've already made a suggestions about doing it for TPS.....so lets see what happens....if all else fails....I'm sure I can hook something up via Cafe Press...but it'll be quite a few weeks before I know either way.

Any chance of doing a color one blink.gif unsure.gif

A colour one what?

If I did a third one, it would almost certainly be colour - probably a cunk of Duck-Bay pan or something like that.
