Spirit might not be moving very much, but the scenery here is fascinating...

Have they made a significant discovery or are there problems?
I think it's the former. Remember the high silica stuff?

...it looks like Spirit made a sort of trench.
I haven't been carefully following every little move, but I thought it appeared as if they trenched the Gertrude Weise area, the bright, high silica stuff they've been investigating for a number of sols, now. The APXS reportedly showed 90% non-crystalline silica, meaning it is not simply quartz. Geochemically, you would want to carefully characterize such material in context, since it is an important indication that water was likely involved in its origin in one way or another. This stuff is potentially another important discovery to be added to Spirit's long list.

It is indeed. I don't think we've seen a greater diversity of both rock and soil types at any other location on Mars before...the history of this region must be somethng to behold, if we can decipher it. Steve's probably close to losin' it right now! laugh.gif

A few will take this knowledge and use this power of a dream realized as a force for change, an impetus for further discovery to make less ancient dreams real.

Here is a 1x2 navcam mosaic of "Gertrude Weise" and the scuffed area, taken on sol 1201. A 4x3 pancam mosaic (L257R2) of that same area was shot today (sol 1202), but hasn't hit the ground yet.

Now I'm wondering if Spirit will return back again to GW for further investigation of the new trench or will she finally make honor to the name of this thread. wink.gif
My 2c on the former.

Nice colorization, Stu. cool.gif
The second one is part of the pancam mosaic I referred on my previous post. Here is what has been downlinked up to now (9 out of 12 pointings), in B&W.

Umm... can I apply my sol 1205 guess for the "entering Victoria crater" pool to the "return to top of Home Plate" pool? biggrin.gif
