The presenter of yesterday's NASA Science Update press conference promised "stunning images and 'an incredible surprise', for the MER press conference promotion."

Any ideas?

We don't have the first big MER pan of Victoria on the ground yet.....what else is taking great pictures?

Hint - I may end up moving this thread.

I will be in the press room here in Valencia online watching NASA TV - I wouldn't miss it for anything.

That must be some mighty fine HiRISE picture. It's either that or Oppy got pregnant laugh.gif

Does that mean you'll be asking questions over the phone or will you be in a different kind of press room than I imagine ?

Let me make sure I've got this right, this is at 11am EDT on Friday right? 4 hours behind UTC, so 1500?

That's 1am saturday morning here on AEST, looks like it'll be a late night!

A HiRISE surprise at an MER press conference? A bit odd that, no? Unless Doug knows something already to the contrary I'd expect it to be a MER surprise. What are we missing ????????

No - unfrotunately the press room here at the conference is just for the conference - but it has net access and so I can watch NASA TV smile.gif

There is an MRO conference on the Monday as well (was last time I looked at the schedule) - but I was told that friday would be interesting. Why would my blog entry include meridiani sized dunes and rover sized rocks? I can't add any more than that. No guarentees (everything was still waiting to be downlinked) - but I would consider this the must-see press con. of the year for a Mars enthusiast.

Hard to believe anything else... unless Opportunity has made a stunning discovery and only now they tell us about it.

You don't need to.
The hints say: "Victoria Crater and Opportunity rover as seen from HiRISE". cool.gif

Fingers crossed...

Now, THAT would be something. Imagine also getting the view in color!
Too bad I'm still at work by the time the conference begins... dry.gif

Oppy stumbled across the Icarus crash site...first Mars landing failure.

Seriously, if hires can see Oppy, there is a possibility of locating other crash sites - my crystal ball sees a massive, Seti-at-home-like search for Beagle II & company.

Beagle might be a good start because there already is a candidate crater (even if a very ambiguous detection is at hand) whose accurate location is known.
But, we digress...
