The animation is quite crude, so if you expect something like NASA's EDL animation for MERs, you will be disappointed.

I didn't quite understand how the thing just stopped in mid-air and let the rover out. is there a parachute? retro-rockets?

edit - "this version does not have engine effects for the skycrane"

The lander + skycrane will drop out of the backshell, much like Viking, MPL, and Phoenix
. Fire the pyro bolts that hold it up there, and because it's drag is very low compared to the now light backshell and chute - it drops out. Probably a second later, the engines will start up to do the powered descent

A question for the UMSF community. Does anyone have update on
the use of Ka-band for MSL's landing radar? This should allow a more
focused beam and more accurate readings, if I understand this correctly.
