Always be polite and courteous...

Gagarin's manners got him into space

By Simon Saradzyghan in Moscow

Filed: 16/04/2006

He was hand picked for one of humanity's greatest ever solo missions - the
Soviet Union's bid to stake the hammer and sickle flag in the heavens. But,
45 years after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space, the real reason
why he was chosen for his country's high honour has finally emerged.

And know the major events of your nation's history...

The little known details about Gagarin's selection were publicised last week to
rekindle national pride in his exploits, after a poll by the All Russian Public
Opinion Research Centre revealed that three out of 10 Russians were unaware
that their country was the first to send someone into space.

"After having some business dealings with men, I am occasionally chagrined,
and feel as if I had done some wrong, and it is hard to forget the ugly circumstance.
I see that such intercourse long continued would make one thoroughly prosaic, hard,
and coarse. But the longest intercourse with Nature, though in her rudest moods, does
not thus harden and make coarse. A hard, sensible man whom we liken to a rock is
indeed much harder than a rock. From hard, coarse, insensible men with whom I have
no sympathy, I go to commune with the rocks, whose hearts are comparatively soft."

Belgian newspaper reported today:
cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin didn't meant anything special when he said: 'I flew in space but didn't see God ' on the contrary, Belgian Church-net was asked by Russian Interfax to specify GAGARIN was baptised and a religous man http://www.hln.be/hlns/cache/det/art_19650...n=categorieArt1

Celebrating the first NASA tin-can-on-a-rocket flight:

http://sfa.jsc.nasa.gov/45years.cfm

There was a special on the Mercury program leading up to Freedom 7's lauch on the NASA channel last week. It was clear from the breaks in the footage someone had edited out the string of failures leading up to Shepard's launch - the 60's dialog talked about the lessons learned from the failures while omitting the abortive events. The rapid conversion of a military missile to a manned platform was extremely risky.

Good! Sergei Pavlovich deserves this kind of honor. It's long overdue.
