I think I have a new love for MER images, because now they've got a whole page with lots of the MIs in colour.
Thanks Emily for the heads up http://www.planetary.org/blog/article/00002928/ I think these are my favourites so far... Wonderous colours... http://marswatch.astro.cornell.edu/pancam_...P2957L257F1.jpg Pick the odd rock out... http://marswatch.astro.cornell.edu/pancam_...P2956L257F9.jpg |

Well, thanks VERY much. I had a "To Do" list to get through today that had so many items on it I had to write it on a roll of kitchen paper, then I took a "quick look" at that site...
That is a cave full of glittering jewels, seriously. You mentioned the colours... oh yes... the colours of Mars, right there, for us all to enjoy... And you can use those images to make 3D pairs, and even mosaics... My eye was drawn to the MI images of "Lemon Rind", a hole ground out of the rock "Fruit Basket" on Sol 560 by Oppy. Here is a colour pic of it (it's the top hole of the two, I think), created using L456 images from the PDS... Using four of the the MI pics on the new site I was able to make a mosaic of the feature, and with a bit of, I freely admit, unashamedly unscientific 'playing about' I came up with this... Full size version here: http://twitpic.com/43k5eu That's art, on Mars, right there. In a couple of hundred years time, just as we now display petroglyphs and cave art, these RAT holes will be on display in museums and galleries, I swear, on Earth and Mars, sculptures created by amazing robots, designed and built by amazing people. -------------------- |

Ugh! Hadn't even occurred to me that you could make mosaics out of these.

I had a blast with these last night too. Seriously this is one of the best parts of having BOTH UMSF and Emily's TPS blog. Emily finds cool stuff the rest of us don't notice. (so send in your donations today).
My favorite is the "Bounce Rock" RAT MI with it's almost "Man in the Moon" face (and different colors). http://marswatch.astro.cornell.edu/pancam_...9L456F1_qn1.jpg -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.
