Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Telescopic Observations _ New image processing technique finds planets in 1998 archival Hubble image

Scientists using a new image processing technique have uncovered images of 3 out of the 4 known planets around HR 8799 in Hubble images dating all the way back to 1998. The team is now planning on automating this image processing technique and use it on several hundred more star systems in the archival data. Not sure why its not in the publicity photos, but the illustrations in their paper shows some significant movement in the 5+ images of the system the telescope captured from 1998-2009.

Such amazing times we live in - can't wait till they publish the results in a year or two after they go through the rest of the archives!

Wow. These truly are amazing times. That image blew me away.

Ever since my father taught me some basic astronomy as a kid in the 1950's I have been awaiting the discovery of other solar systems. I had to wait a long time to learn of the confirmed observation of an extrasolar planet. Now we are finding them left and right, and sometimes imaging them directly. I couldn't be more excited about how clever our species has become in the hunt for neighbors. It has been worth the wait.
