At Harder's suggestion I'm starting a thread to collect links to places that promise live streams during the MSL landing. NASA TV is of course the #1 place to go, and I assume that NASA TV will be mirrored on the NASAJPL Ustream channel. The Society will be offering a stream from Planetfest. SpaceflightNow usually does live updates but experience has shown that they don't handle heavy traffic well. Failing anything else, you can bet your bottom dollar I will be Tweeting up a storm.

Anybody have other live stream / live update suggestions? Post them here. Please keep chitchat to a minimum to make it easy to find links among the text.

Is anyone planning to live-stream the EDL animation, correctly synched (as well as possible) to actual events? Maybe NASA will do that...

I'm hoping we'll have a live real time feed from the live EDL visualization ( that runs of MODY bent pipe telem at about a 1hz refresh rate, + dropouts ) possibly on Ustream. I'm going to ask, anyway.

And Eyes on the Solar System should have one as a predicted simulation of events - like EPOXI and Stardust NExT.

Good idea, thanks Emily.

Just learned that at 0531 UTC 06 AUG, I will be 20 minutes away from landing after an 11hr flight in London. Wow, am I ever going to pray for a favorable jet stream! Hope I get to use the stream links, or if we land on schedule, first thing I'll do when I boot my tablet on the tarmac is punch unmannedspaceflight and look for happy posts...

Which Earth-based antenna is likely to get the first indication of a successful landing? A quick check with Stellarium indicates that at Goldstone, CA, Mars will be just setting at 10:31 PT on Aug. 5. It will be well below the horizon at Madrid and Jodrell Bank, UK. So would Canberra (Mars elevation over 60° at zero hour) be the one?

For people down Australia way, Canberra DSN is hosting a live landing party but for those of us on the other side of the world they have a twitter feed:

That will be the antennas at the Canberra DSN.
The 70-metre antenna Deep Space Station 43 will be Prime for uplink and downlink.
The 34-metre antenna Deep Space Station 34 will be its backup.

Important note: We are only the conduit for the data and it will be the happy mission team at JPL and through NASA who will let you know about all aspects of the mission. wink.gif

Emily -

Do you have any info or an update to the recent Retuers news report that we may not have a downlink opportunity of MSL landing confirmation/data for hours following the landing? News story is at: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/16/...B87958820120716

This could certainly impact what streaming coverage we can expect for the landing and first images.

Odyssey maybe moved back into the correct orbit. If not then the overflight by Odyssey will indeed be a few hours later. Odyssey does have plenty of propellent left to get back into the correct orbit.

I appears that Odyssey has been repositioned and now in the correct orbit to do the comm. relay for the MSL landing. Story at:

And with that awesome news - that means there should be a real-time visualization of EDL on NASA TV.

I can confirm, ODY is in position! Yeah for ODY! Isn't she great?

I was pretty sure all the stops would be removed to get ODY in place for such an important landing, successful or not, as we all know it's important to have as much data from the EDL as possible.

Do you mean that there will be a real representation of what's happening, directly from analysis of the telemetry ? Does it include only the tones, or the "full" data that will be bentpiped as well ?
