To help get an idea of what observations (and possibly predictions) of airglow exist, here is an example of some small-scale gravity waves showing up in the airglow from VIIRS. The concentric rings in the image below are from gravity waves generated from thunderstorms in South Texas. These waves propagate to the upper atmosphere and affect the airglow, possibly with corresponding temperature fluctuations near the mesosphere thermosphere boundary.
