Not to sidetrack a somewhat sidetracked thread...but... (Edit: Yea! new thread)
Here's a sub-frame of the new color image of the Columbia Hills, made from the Red and Blue filters with a synth green and a bit of contrast tweaking. Full Res (5 meg) |

Yeah, the image underimpressed me a little bit too; I like Slinted's version much better than the one on the UA website. Does it appear more "noisy" in part because the Sun is rather high in this shot, so there is less shadow and hence less contrast?

No idea why it might be, perhaps it's just the fact that we're getting more to the Martian winter? I checked the image parameters and nothing is unusual, so, well, I don't know what it might be.

No idea why it might be, perhaps it's just the fact that we're getting more to the Martian winter? I checked the image parameters and nothing is unusual, so, well, I don't know what it might be. If the atmosphere was hazy, that could also be a factor. Also, with the color being blue-green, the atmosphere is more of a factor (it is clearest in red). Not having seen the raw data though, I am purely speculating. -------------------- |

If you browse through all the hirise releases you'll notice that many of the images taken after April 2007 or so are extremely noisy.
Images like http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/PSP_005581_1815 are so bad they look like they are binned 2x2 but they're not. Occasionally, like http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/PSP_005414_1735 , there's almost no noise at all. Could it be the extra dust in the air since the Great Dust Storm is making the CCD-noise problem worse than before? http://themis.asu.edu/dustmaps/ shows there STILL seems to be extra dust above Meridiani, so that could be it. Does anybody know when and where exactly the dust activity began last Spring? Worth checking out. |
