Looked at from above Mitcheltree ridge looks like a semicircular remnant of an earlier circular feature.

A circle would fit even better, IMHO. Note the dark feature NWW of HP - possibly an eroded central peakr?

Central peaks are only found in much larger craters.

One test might be the nature of the other outcrops nearby, including Faget, Oberth etc. and the light outcrops near Comanche. Were the latter basically the same as the top of HP? Will we see HP-style fine layering in Faget? The more widespread this stuff is, the less likely it was erupted out of HP, and vice versa.

Phil

Phil:

That's *exactly* what we need here - some ground truth which will nail the blighter. If the HP deposit is simply an outstanding part of a general feature of the area, then it opens one set of doors; if not, another.

I confess that I lean more and more to HP being interesting, and convenient, but *not* special.

You may be right; like Phil, I don't see a central peak but there is a faint hint of a circular dark trace on the west side of your proposed circle.

At the present, do we have sufficient topographic detail from the MOLA survey or from stereo imaging from MGS to see what's there? I'm old fashioned; I like contour lines. dry.gif

If not, we'll just have to wait till the MRO gives us some HIRISE images, cause Spirit's not likely to get to that neighborhood.
