New Horizons Jupiter Encounter Options

That's a great idea. People could submit digital copies of their signature, I or one of the other image processing folks here can put the poster together, and we can either send it to them as a digital file or if anyone is enterprising enough, can send them a printed copy of the poster.

I, too, commend Stern and Co. for their outreach efforts. Indeed, involving the public beforehand and getting the data out so quickly is especially impressive given the time constraints.

Perhaps we could pull off something similar to the 2000 Sols posters I did for the MER team. A photomosaic using all the LORRI images - of the Europa rising image?

Okay, I found software to view the LORRI data, not just got to find something to work with the LEISA and MVIC data...

EDIT: now I can view MVIC data, but still no luck with LEISA data.

I think a "thank you" poster, signed by the collective members of UMSF, would be a great gift for the New Horizons team. It could be decorated with some of the images from the Jupiter encounter, such as Exploitcorporation's great colour composite of Io and Europa.

Ssshh... don't let the NH team know about this, we want it to be a surprise...

Yeah, I think I may just stick with the LORRI stuff. Here is an attempt at the MVIC data:



The biggest issue is that I can't convert the data to I/F (unless I'm wrong about this...), which would allow me to create reasonable color images. It is still a no go with the LEISA data, I just can't find anything that handles multispectral FITS images. ISIS doesn't seem to support at least rudimentary FITS to ISIS conversion.

To be honest though, unless you really need the increased dynamic range (for example, like for Jupiter terminator images and Io Jupiter-shine), the JPEG set already posted is good enough for LORRI data. MVIC data is the real prize and LEISA data isn't too bad either (it is just taking me a little longer to actually use the data compared to the other two data sets).

I should also point out that the PDS only contains data returned through May 1 (or so). There is a lot of data taken during the latter part of the encounter which has not been posted there.

Do I need increased dynamic range? Of course not. But I can have it, so I want it.

I have managed to download the 6 GB .tar file with the Level 3 LORRI data (using Wget), but it seems Winzip can't handle archives that large. Can anyone recommend a freeware or shareware thingy that will unpack an archive that's 6 GB in size?
