OK, this sounds a bit goofy, but what the heck!
There's a project that the Canberra DSN is assisting in, to transmit a message to the solar system around star Gliese 581 in the direction of the constellation Libra. The public is being invited to add messages - of 160 characters - to a website http://www.hellofromearth.net Keep it clean and it will be included in a file to be transmitted around 0200UTC on 28th August 2009. The project is being done as a serious piece of public science engagement for National Science Week in Australia. The response on day one has been amazing, some of the messages left so far are hilarious. Anything written in poor taste will be edited before transmission. We don't want to start any interstellar wars. At over 20 light years away, don't expect any answers for quite some time Astro0 |

Please tell the Australians they are upside down. They refuse to believe me.

"Hello. We're conducting a survey. Can we have 4000 years of your time?"
