Yes, congratulations! Currently her asteroid is in southern Pisces about three degrees due south of Epsilon Piscium. I'll give a salute in that direction tomorrow morning.

I knew it had been proposed by Rainer Kresken and Matthias Busch (they needed to know my birth year for the citation, and the Wikipedia page wasn't up yet) but had no idea when or if it'd be accepted. It's indeed quite an honor! Thanks, everybody. I'm pleased it's a main-belt asteroid and therefore no threat to anybody, at least for the foreseeable future smile.gif

Well done, Emily!

A little info on the asteroid http://comets-asteroids.findthedata.org/l/526504/274860-2009-RE26

OK people, so now we need mission proposals.

Mission science, spacecraft specs, propulsion, power systems (solar, mmrtg?), science instruments, cameras, sample return system! Work out the trajectory. Crowd source funds for a piggyback on a launch vehicle. Build a mission control infrastructure, a deep space comms system, deal with planetary protection protocols, sample re-entry vehicle etc....

Easy smile.gif laugh.gif

Wouldn't be easier to meet the real one?

274860 Congratulations Emily! BTW, we know now your full birthdate laugh.gif

Seems like we should all chip in for some upgrades.

No ordinary 'rock' for our Emily, this one needs a major ring system and a retinue of satellites!!

Would Emily's wishes regarding crater, mountain, and escarpment naming be observed if/when her asteroid is reconnoitered ??

Maybe honoring some retired Planetary Society staffers or significant and fondly remembered teachers in Emily's schooling? Might be a nice and heartfelt opportunity.

Posted by: elakdawalla Jul 17 2014, 12:40 AM

It's a nice thought, but I'm not sure I'll live to see a future in which random km-sized asteroids in the main belt get visited by camera-equipped spacecraft. NEOs, maybe, but it's real hard for me to imagine it happening in the main belt. (And yes, that is a challenge smile.gif )

Congrats! A real (well-deserved) honour!
