By yours truly: Nighttime Optical Depth Patterns from the Mars Exploration Rovers

and another one with my name on it: Time-Dependent Dust Accumulation on the Mars Phoenix Wind Indicator

I've somehow been put in charge of coordinating an LPSC tweetup, so for those of you interested (we'll accept you, even if you don't have an account!) I'll post details once I figure something out. smile.gif

I got a nice stash this summer. My department was cleaning out rooms for renovation and they were going to throw away everything. Luckily I got to dig though piles upon piles of books and take home whatever I wanted for free! I snagged things like a book autographed by Ted Fujita (guy who made the tornado Fujita scale, among other things) and a copy of The New Solar System by Chaikin et al. Let's just say there were so many books, I had to go buy a new bookshelf at home. smile.gif

Howdy, UMSFers! I've got a bit of a request, and it's on somewhat of a short notice (sorry!)

So this semester I'm helping to teach a class about Mars, and this coming Monday (as in Oct 26th) we're going into what's called the IVC (and for those who wants specs, they're here: http://ivc.tamu.edu/index.html) It's a big visualization screen that can do 3D and all other sorts of neat things. Thing is, they only have a handful of Mars images, including the Phoenix 360 stereo panorama I gave them. They have one from Pathfinder, one from Mars Express, and one from Opportunity inside Eagle Crater. I could give them all the Phoenix stereo images and quite a few MER ones, but they're requesting that they be in stereo color, which I don't have.

The screen requires them to be separate images (so separate left and right eye images) and they don't have to be 100% accurate color. If anyone could send me a handful of pretty ones from any mission, I'd really appreciate it! We plan on spending the rest of the class time playing around in Google Mars, so it doesn't have to be many.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't say Veronica started the Twitter craze, but she was one of the founding ladies of NASA's use of social media. smile.gif

Digging up an old subject, but I did my term paper on comparative planetary meteorology! I had more fun writing this paper than should be allowed. biggrin.gif

If anyone is willing to review it in the next 24 hours or so (it's due Thursday at 2pm central), let me know!

This is probably my favorite April Fool's joke ever! http://www.expedia.com/daily/mars/flights-...?mcicid=Mars_us

I booked a trip for spring 2010 to stay in Villa Marineris, along with a chartered Mars rover ride, Olympus Mons hike, and Mars history tour. smile.gif Good after graduation present, right?

Stu, you've figured out my secret! Now just don't take away my coffee... (and you're welcome!)

I've ran into a couple of you so far and it's been awesome! Emily posted my little LPSC writeup this morning, so check it out when ya'll can.

The meetup for Thursday will be 6pm in front of the poster session. There's that little circle of chairs kinda by the Lunar Cafe, and I'll be waiting there. Group photo definitely required! smile.gif

My two cents are that we should continue to care. Sure, it's not going to be some big, awesome prize at the end for the winning mission, but it's about outreaching and winning those over that normally wouldn't care about space. There's missions on there that I have never heard of, but due to this contest, I now have!

And isn't educating people about space the goal of all of us at the end of the day?

And anyway, what else am I going to do before the BSG finale tonight? laugh.gif

I'd just like to point out the fact that SPB has once again pulled ahead of MER.

I'll be there!

For those who won't be there, I'll be live Twittering as much as I can (http://twitter.com/aggieastronaut) and Emily's asked me to write a post about the water on the legs session Monday afternoon.

I'm also trying to arrange a meetup Thursday night for dinner before the poster session for MER's Facebook friends, but it wouldn't be hard to combine.

Nah, I think Phoenix likes her siblings enough to vote for them. smile.gif

I've been told that the aeronautics department at NASA is ganging up on MER. We need to make sure we beat them. smile.gif

This voting definitely seems a bit fishy... you don't think Phoenix came back to life and managed to get online, do you..? wink.gif

*This* voice of Phoenix is voting for MER. wink.gif

Looks like someone has automated the voting process to skew the results against MER.

I'll have to find out who is doing it then tap them next round when Phoenix goes against Apollo 11. rolleyes.gif

Voting has begun. Right now the superpressurized balloon is beating MER, so I think UMSF needs to show a little MER love. smile.gif

Just go here: http://mission-madness.nasa.gov/mm/bracket.html and click submit vote once you're done.

Before I forget to mention it, the smileys and the 'soandso has joined the chat' etc. were edited out. Other than that, it's word for word.
