So I think we'll find that Earth and Mercury have portions of their cores that rotate at different rates (this is already known to be true of Earth), while Venus does not.

I wonder if Mercury's resonant rotation (59 days/88 day 'year'), a 2:3 ratio, has anything to do with this. The rotation rate does not change, although the apparent motion of the Sun does this celestial tapdance.

A primer on the rotation:

A Portal to Mars on the Tip of Iceland
A volcano erupting on the island is a living replica of what once happened on Mars.

Fascinating article in The Atlantic about using the Geldingadalur volcanic eruption in Iceland as a proxy for studying ancient Martian vulcanism.

QUOTE
If the conduit to the magma below remains open, the Geldingadalur eruption could end up building a small shield volcano, an extremely broad magmatic mound with a very low-angle slope. Such an edifice would be comparable to those found all over Mars, Hamilton says, which means this eruption could allow scientists to watch one grow on Earth in real time.
*****
Martian eruptions often involved an exceedingly fluid version of basalt, suggesting that its volcanoes may sometimes have had Icelandic-style plumbing.
