Yup - I agree with your position on the 857 image but converting that to a position on the route map is not so easy as neather of the features you mention can be seen - or have you spotted something I haven't?

The Oppy drivers are very intelligently not caring about dropping to the right of the beeline towards Beagle. They seem to only focus on the traversability of the immediate surroundings, and going for the easier road. That is the correct way of doing it, since the exposed bedrock around Beagle will make it quite easy to tack back towards the crater, when they get down in the vicinity of Beagle.

Below is the guessed Oppy route toward BC for the sol 862 (right now).

Attached Image

Tomorrow, we are going to know it.

CODE
862 p1131.04 2   0   2   0   0   4    f_haz_idd_mb_doc_512x512x1bpp_vhigh

862 p1305.07 2   0   0   2   0   4    rear_haz_penultimate_0.5bpp_pri17
862 p1311.07 2   0   0   2   0   4    rear_haz_ultimate_1_bpp_crit15
862 p1982.04 10  0   0   10  0   20   navcam_5x1_az_180_custom <---
862 p2435.07 8   0   0   8   2   18   pancam_drive_direction_4cx1r_L2R2
862 p2600.09 2   2   0   0   2   6    pancam_tau
862 p2600.09 2   2   0   0   2   6    pancam_tau
862 Total    36  4   2   30  6   78

The suggested route would still be on southwards. For navigation purposes, Oppy will rely only on Navcam, since the Forward, Rear Hazard cameras have too low resolution to identify the grain. Spirit only uses them.

Route map to sol 862.

Attached Image

~25m, right onto the tiny outcrop seen in the 860 images.

I've been doing some more work on this and I think I can identify some features:

Attached Image

Which changes the Sol 862 (and retrospectively Sol 860) positions quite a bit.

Attached Image

Good news is, this puts us a bit closer to Corner Crater than before smile.gif

James

----

EDIT: Replaced with another refinement.

If this new position is correct then I think the sol 857 position is probably a bit off (I think Tesheiner just took the tracking value for that one) there is no way the sol 860 drive was as long as it appears now.

Tesheiner,

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date with progress maps (and thanks to James for updating them in Tesheiner's absence).

You might have noticed that we are now in a position where we can shift the detailed map to include the north-western edge of Victoria Crater. It makes our destination feel that much closer now.

Good pinpointing. Now the route sol 862 map is Ok!

Just measured the remaining distance to Victoria. 770 m as the (big winged) crow flies smile.gif

That's about the distance from Eagle Crater to Endurance.

Wow. A couple of years ago that distance was a giant leap that took us past the 90 day design life of the Rovers. Today that is virtually a short stroll to see what is over the next hill.

The guess sol 684 route, there are 3 possibilities:

The sol 683 won't be a driving day but just doing many pancam pictures.

Great work, as always, Rod, but you need to rest your eyes. Take a coffee break. 684 ain't 864. cool.gif

I would be almost certain that the next waypoint will be that outcrop directly south - we should make it on the next drive or the one after.

Note that every entry appears three times in this list so it's not as many as it appears. I don't agree that the number of hazcam shots programmed has any relevence to the drive distance - all the driving images (autonav/slip detection) that may indicate distance are commanded by the fight software and don't appear on the tracking database beforehand.

About the 162 degrees - that is the pointing direction of the centre image in the 5 frame navcam pan taken *after* the drive I don't think it tells us anything about the upcoming drive direction. It *may* indicate the general dirction of the drive after the upcoming one - and indeed, it is pointed toward Beagle smile.gif.

I'm back to "business" but still in recovery-mode trying to sync myself with all that happened during this week.

Nice to see we are steadily approaching BC.

Think so. In fact I just picked the data from the tracking web (there were no close features/outcrops to refine the positioning) and that could be a bit short because there was a new site defined at end-of-drive, resetting all distance parameters.

And many thanks to keep the route map updated, James.

Sol 864 tracking data is up - looks like a ~42m drive - waiting for images...

--

Hmm, doesn't look like we've had any images in over 24 hours - I hope Exploratorium isn't down again.

Here is the position for 864 from just the tracking data then.

Attached Image

(I thought I'd take this one while Tesh gets back up to speed.)
