Good morning. My name is Joel Signorelli and this is the Flight Director’s report for the 29th of June.

On Opportunity it is sol 864. The odometer on Opportunity just clicked passed 8000 meters. We are about 700 meters from Victoria Crater and around 200 meters from a small crater called Beagle. We may actually stop at Beagle Crater along the way if it proves to be scientifically interesting.
The rover drivers have done an excellent job of navigating the rover down channels in between the sand dunes and along the way the scientists are naming interesting features after cattle drive names of the American Old West.

And on Spirit it’s sol 884. We’ve just completed McMurdo Pan column number 22 out of our planned 27 images we want to take. We’ve also been analysing a soil patch called Brunt using our Alpha Particle X-Ray spectrometer, our Moessbauer spectrometer and also taking detailed images using our microscopic imager.
Now winter continues to advance on Spirit. In fact, last week for the first time in the whole mission the battery heaters inside the rover actually turned on in order to keep our batteries healthy.
And also for the first time we are now below 300 watt hours of energy coming off our solar array. And this compares to over 900 watt hours we were getting off the solar array when we first landed back during the summertime.

Now on both rovers we’re upgrading our flight software and this is equivalent to upgrading your programs at home on your PC. Over the next few weeks, we will be uploading 200 files to each vehicle and these files contain new enhancements for the rover and actually will take care of some flight software bugs that have been there for a while.

Well that’s it for now. My name is Joel Signorelli and that’s what’s been happening on Mars.
