The "thin layer" strongly resembles reflections from crystal faces in the veins that have been polished by the wind.
If you ever walk along a crushed shale road or driveway at dawn, you see a similar glint from the crystal faces
of shale layers and any inclusions.

The general "sheen" you see on the mudstone polygons is consistent with "pipestone"
fine grained, slightly metamorphosed mudstone/argillite aka (clays, silica, alumina-silicates) aka Catlinite.

It polishes up to a nice glossy finish, you see it in carved stone art from Maori, Haida and US plains Indians.

Generally found as lenses and defined layers within large mudstone outcrops.

I agree, the ones you show appear to be sitting on or protruding from the rock, and where translucent and greenish, could be wind-transported olivine grains. For embedded, I was thinking of some of the less obvious ones, mainly in the shadowed region, that seem to fade into the rock, depending on how deeply embedded or small they are. If not spherules or mineral clasts, these could be some form of light-colored concretion. Still greater resolution would be nice, in this regard.

Wow!! what have perhaps inadvertently become time lapse frames in Fredk's hands provide a rare and really quite astonishing glimpse into how the airflow and sand movement is actually behaving! .. now if they could purposefully set up some sequences like this using mastcam pairs, i suspect the result could be quite instructive..

also throwing in an unrelated color crosseye of the mudcrackers from sol1566.

1568 R-MastCam of an interesting outcrop. Also features several 'grey' items that could be additional meteorite fragments / hematite balls etc?

They appear to be getting fairly common in this relatively small location? smile.gif

Even more interesting are the holes and shadows, which means the "pizzelle weathering" isn't a trick of the light.

Stroopwafels may have stood up to weathering a bit better! wacko.gif ....crosseye of mudstone revelaing some sand movement and protruding artifact using sol1566 and sol1568 views

this sol1571 image stands out, looks as if the dust is pushed out from the central area, it looks as if it has received laser hits that cold be responsible for this.. the same area is covered pre-laser in this sol1570 Mahli at lower right, rotated a bit.

Here is a beautifully exposed sol1570 MAHLI of the previously mentioned rmi target

Also, this sol1570 MAHLI shows at near top what looks to be a somewhat significant crystal complete with facets? ..or a reflection/refraction trick? if only this image showed a bit higher up it would serve as a closeup. fwiw i made a crosseye of the pair retaining the 'crystal' in the left image. edit: found another pair from sol1569 that doesn't have much parallax but it shows up in both, here's a stereo excerpt.

Sand movement near the "marble" (I measure 8.4 mm diameter) between 1555 and 1571:

(I haven't removed some distortions due to slightly different imaging locations.)

Edit: all we see here looks like sand movement due to wind (apart from the distortion), just as we've seen elsewhere in this area.
