Are there any working theories why the 2 impactor probes (Deep Space 2) that piggybacked on the Mars Polar Lander did not work? Their failure should have nothing to do with the problem with the MPL lander since they were released far above the surface.
I beleive they were designed to withstand 100 gravities of deceleration and still function. Anyone? |

Perhaps soemone else recalls follow-up work done recently by NASA on the Deep Space 2 Penetrator design. If memory serves, then I believe that this work was done to qualify the design, taking into consideration the criticisms listed by the Investigative Board. However, I have searched the Internet for information on this DS-2 follow-up and have come up dry. As I recall, it was low-profile and low-cost, but was intended to reduce the technical risk of the design for future missions. Another Phil |

Another Phil Here I am replying to myself, as I have found the DS-2 Follow-On Report. It was done about 3 years ago and here is the link to the work that JPL did to validate its design principles. http://extenv.jpl.nasa.gov/presentations/DS2-Follow.pdf Another Phil |
