Initial parking orbit is good - at last we're off the ground
During ascent I suddenly thought "woh, if this doesnt work - MSL is going to suffer a lot" - and got rather nervous Not out of the woods yet- another centaur burn to go - and actually, I was suprised to hear that the centaur put the parking orbit perigee about 6 nm off target - that's a lot. Doesnt really matter that much I'd have though - it IS only a parking orbit after all, and it'll probabyl be made up on the second burn Doug |

I cranked up Orbiter - ran thru to September 7th - and with HiRise - Earth SHOULD be actually quite impressive.

QUOTE (djellison @ Aug 18 2005, 08:48 PM) I cranked up Orbiter - ran thru to September 7th - and with HiRise - Earth SHOULD be actually quite impressive. Doug According to data on the current trajectory, on Sept. 7th the MRO-earth distance should be 8.8e6 km. So the earth would represent about 5.2 arcsec. A HiRISE pixel is 30cm at 300 km or 0.0036 arsec, so that would mean an earth image about 1454 pixels wide. Is that about what you get? If so, the image might look something like: http://marsrecon.com/hirisesim.html Joe -------------------- |
