Like most people I'm sure, I was impressed with the work of Phil Stooke and Dilo in recently pinpointing Opportunity's location using polar projection of panoramas side by side with orbiter imagery. I have a special request for Phil or Dilo, or anyone else interested in the challenge:
I am doing another write up for my site and I'm trying to get a handle on the strike and dip of the layered outcrops at West Spur. So i was hoping I could get someone to create polar projection stereo pairs (not anaglyphs) for these two panoramas from sol 271........ Left (3.5Mb): http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/pre...yp_L-A283R1.jpg Right (4.5Mb): http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/pre...yp_R-A283R1.jpg Cylindrical projection with azimuth co-ordinates (3.9Mb): http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/pre..._cyl-A283R1.jpg ........and re-size the 2m/pixel orbiter image on the link below to match the polar projections. http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2004/01/23/ I realize it's a lot of work but I think it could help to tie in structures seen at Larry's Lookout, Methuselah and Voltaire. Thanks in advance, Aldo. -------------------- |

Aldo, I think is impossible to match a Polar projection to satellite images, but you are probably referring to vertical projections, in analogy to my Opportunity route maps... as previously highlighted, the issue with Spirit is that terrain cannot be approximated with a flat plain, so we need a topographic model to project onto... Herebelow you can see the vertical projection from cylindrical mosaic you linked above: the Gusev plain is good (and in fact I used this technique to identify plain features and deduce the height above the plain), but on the right there is a clear distorsion due to terrain slope, which makes objects deformed, farther and bigger than normal
