By the way, I was working on an experiment tonight and I thought the results were encouraging enough to share. It is an attempt at a longer baseline anaglyph that would better bring out the 3D effect for features in the distance. Many of us have seen the remarkable 3D effects from the hazcams, navcams, and pancams, but that effect diminishes with distance, since the two eyes are very close together. Someone else (sorry, forgot who) previously pointed out that long-baseline stereo could increase the depth of field of stereo pairs.
I think this anaglyph can still be tweaked a bit, but I am too tired tonight. It is a navcam view toward Home Plate using imagery from sols 582 and 590. The baseline varied not only laterally, but vertically as well, so the geometry was a bit tedious to work out to optimize the effect. I had to approximate it. I think this zoomed anaglyph improves on the depth of field of the 3D effect, but I would like to get some feedback from you critics. edited to add: I'd sure like some pancams to experiment with... -------------------- ...Tom

Interesting results, but for sure we will have better long-baseline homeplate 3D images with Pancam when Spirit will move in the East direction instead of Sud...
This is an example of what obtained looking toward SE (Sol589-590, crossed eyes): -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -

I think that's the best 3D look at Home Plate I've seen so far. But there's defintely more to come: QUOTE Once that's done, we're going to do a little shimmy-step to the left and take the same panorama again, to get some "long-baseline stereo" coverage that we'll use to plan upcoming descent into the Inner Basin. Nico,
I'm with Aviation Week and would like to use the b/w panorama (not anaglyph) called "Spirit in the Sky" - Thira on the Horizon, that shows the Gusev rim. It is a really nice job. The file name I have is nix_L7.jpg and it further says Pancam Sol 581 L7-R1. If that's okay, am wondering how you got the rim to come out so clearly. My impression is that 1) you chose a filter that is less affected by haze, 2) you may have done some processing to bring out the rim, and 3) maybe it was a relatively clear day anyway. Please send an email to me at mdornheim@att.net to let me know if using the pic is OK, with credit, and a quick review of the trickery to make it look nice, and that I've got your name spelled correctly as Nico Taelman. Thanks for your help. -- Mike Dornheim |

QUOTE Here's my Pleiades: um3k's image of the Pleiades That is a better comparison of Spirit's image of the Seven Sisters, being made with a digital camera with a "normal" lens. My image was a 5 minute exposure made with an 8" telescope designed for astrophotography on gas-hypersensitized Kodak 2415 film; I had to "tune the image down" to eliminate much of the faint detail around the star cluster. --Bill -------------------- |

Last update on exploratorium was quite the disappointment for Spirit,
just one single navcam image and pancam images are single pix dots - anything happened to the downlink or could it be just some kind of mistake? Something similar for Opportunity with a long list of thumbnail images in one and dots in the other folder. |

Some progress at Exploratoruim, we now have ONE 12K image of the Gnomon to go along with all the 1-pixel placeholders...
