PS. It's probably highest part of Gusiev Rim (very subtle).

*Arrgh, my eyes. blink.gif Had to really turn up my monitor's contrast and brightness. Nice. Looks like there's an area of lighter soil way in the distance, just to the left (and abutting onto) the 2nd most distant (very distant) tall hill. I wonder if it's a large patch of lighter-colored sand? Who knows of course...just wondering "aloud."

Way to go, Spirit. smile.gif Have been anticipating TN Valley for quite a while.

Yeah, and why are there two versions of the Tennessee mosaic? They probably didn't have time to fully correct it for the Sept. 1 press conference. This lower resolution verision is definitely more "realistic" looking and matches the colours of the main Summit panorama:

Spirit Arrived! ... on Libertys' torch. biggrin.gif

" The highest point in the "Columbia Hills" inside Mars' Gusev Crater, the summit of "Husband Hill," sits 82 meters above the plains at the base of the hills. For comparison, this image shows the Statue of Liberty, which is 93 meters tall from the foundation of its pedestal to the top of Liberty's torch."

blink.gif How'd they get Lady Liberty up there???

Or... is this all a sound-stage, just like those moonlandings they faked in the 20th Century?

To-do-list for Spirit in the coming days/weeks:

- Assess the inner basin and image potential drive paths
- Assess the surrounding terrain and image "Cumberland Ridge"
- Routinely observe the atmosphere during the day and the moons at night
- Study undisturbed soils, scuffed soils, and drift deposits
- Study the structural geology of Husband Hill, including dips
- Observe outcrops and rocks
- Take images for a rover self-portrait
- Complete a panorama on top of the "Columbia Hills"
- Finalize exit strategy

We finally got a set of pancams of Home Plate taken from different locations, so I made this long-baseline anaglyph. I wasn't able to perfectly correct for all of the different angles, but I think it is pretty decent. I used the L7 from sol 591 for the left image and the L6 from sol 583 for the right image. There is a lot more detail visible on Home Plate than in my earlier attempt using navcams.

It appears to me that Home Plate is actually a stack of thinner layers.

Thanks, Nico. Now I am waiting for pancams to the right, so we can better see the area referred to in the recent MER briefing as "the geological promised land." It appears to be an eroded area similar to places often called badlands here on earth. It could be pretty interesting, depending on which kinds of rocks are being eroded there.

Maybe they'll come down tomorrow...

Oh yeah. I noticed this while browsing images today. I'm not sure of the name of this hill, but the apparent layers on the other side of the valley are fascinating, too. My apologies for my imperfect sketching in Photoshop, but could this be an uncomfority on that hill?

That may be an unconformity on that hill to the east, but we'll know more once we get more Pancam images.

The Inner is fascinating, I've been doing a lot with the Nav- and Pancam images that have been posted thus far. I agree that Homeplate is interesting and complex; hopefully it will be a water-borne deposit, but I'd suspect that it is an ashfall. I'm speculating that the many dark boulders and the Ultreya feature are remnants of a dark unit (basalt?) underlying the Homeplate deposit. We'll know more once we get there, and the mosey down will be daily surprises.
