Oppy has already arrived at the etched terrain but not exactly at the "Erebus Highway".
It is currently located (as of sol 562) here: This image (a previous version was posted here) is a combination of Dilo's vertical projections and MOC imagery in which I tried to identify some of the outcrops and also remark the Erebus Highway. Now, Oppy as just turned left (east) to catch the highway instead of going straight ahead to Erebus (which would mean crossing about 100m of dunes, leaving the outcrops behind). But can we see the Erebus Highway on the MER images? I think so. The lower section of the image above is a navcam panorama taken on sol 562, in which I pinpointed some of the same outcrops seen on the first picture. The upper section is part of a pancam pano taken on the same sol, in which I remarked what I believe is a section of the Erebus highway. The features seen there are at about 50m range, which is consistent with the distance to the highway based on MOC images. |

Oppy has started to head SE, hopping one dune so far. |

Burmese: This was the Sol 562 drive.
And here's my updated traverse map. http://xs43.xs.to/pics/05342/Opportunity_Sol_562.gif -------------------- - blue_scape / Nico -

Not there, yet. I look at this as an on-ramp to the Erebus Highway...
Looks like we'll pass just south of an eroded 20m crater in a Sol or two. --Bill -------------------- |

Possible the circular outcrop? It is located a bit below the center on my overview.

Not only do I think we're on the highway now, but I think Erebus is the very next exit!

Oppy really put the pedal to the metal this last drive, as the sequence shows. Popped right over more than half a dozen dunes to get to the highway.
She spun about and drove backwards: http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...E1P1235L0M1.JPG http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...FEP1235L0M1.JPG http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...FWP1235L0M1.JPG http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...HYP1235L0M1.JPG http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...00P1214L0M1.JPG |
