I used Sol583 and Sol595 PanCam l256 color images to obtain this nice crossed eyed South view:
This is a 3x stretch enlarged detail of HomePlate (a little bit noisy but showing 3D structure): I will make soon analglyphed versions... (maybe someone else before me! -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -

I was really hoping to have finished a long baseline anaglyph of the entire basin by now, but several things have conspired to prevent it's completion. I was able to at least make a decent one from two frames that allow Home Plate to be seen with a little more of the surounding context. These used the L7 filter from Sol 595 and the L6 filter from Sol 583. I'm also attaching a 3X Phil-O-Vision version to provide an "extreme" view.
I can see the resemblance to an impact crater, but I think those rims could also be explained as the exhumed edges of a once-more-continuous stack of layers, previously draped over pre-existing topography. However, it is easier to picture a layer of evaporates being deposited within a crater, and If JPL suspects evaporites, they should be in the best position to guess. They have more data than we have. With a little luck, we won't have to wait too much longer before we can see Home Plate in more detail. Regarding the shatter cones, are you people talking about the sloped surfaces on the west side of the plate? The largest shatter cones I have ever heard of weighed several tens of pounds and wouldn't be identifiable from this distance. I think they are normally measured in centimeters. There are some nice pictures of some large and small terrestrial ones here: http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/projects/geoweb/pa...CMorphGSA99.htm -------------------- ...Tom
