Michael found a nice way to correct vignetting of Navcams, as you know. But yesterday he found something thats still more amazing: Navcam IMGs that are called "MILPRAD Radiometrically-corrected RDR calibrated to absolute radiance
units, specific to archived datasets only" in the MER Analyst's Notebook! Here an (large) example what one can do with it: (3,86 MB) http://www.greuti.ch/spirit/Spirit_navcamMRD_sol310.jpg These MRDs are already corrected with a mask that was made on Earth from the MER Navcams before they started. -------------------- |

This is fantastic guys - it's an astonishingly realistic panorama.
Has anyone here tried to carry out the same re-calibration of the raw images? Obviously there's lots of work involved but how practical is it? |

That's it Tman! I've been wondering when you were going for those earlier sols, especially these showing West Spur, AND the rim in tremendous detail.
Very, very neat panorama!!! Euh, would you mind doing the other eye too? Nico -------------------- photographer, space imagery enthusiast, proud father and partner, and geek.

Yeah, that's very nice!
As you already said, the radiometrically calibrated images are just what we tried to achieve with our anti-vignetting efforts, and it's routinely done by the rover team. Unfortunately, these MRD images are only available up to sol 370 or so. So the recent images aren't. I will post something on the conversion of these '.img' images during the next couple of days. They contain 12 bit data and are thus much better than the 8 bit jpegs. I've got another (partial) panorama to offer. It's from Sol 111, and, in my opinion, still one of the best MER images. Full resolution (400k) The complete pan will follow soon. Michael |

QUOTE (MichaelT @ Sep 17 2005, 06:45 PM) As a follow up from my earlier question - I noticed that the MER\Pancam Data Processing User's Guide (here lists reverse look up tables for converting the 8bit images to 12 bit. Is there something that's missing in the data that prevents folks doing this themselves? |

Nico It was always in my mind - more precisely, it is always in my mind, because the pan isn't finished yet I guess today, I was so fascinated about this frame quality that I was too fast ready with it... Sadly there is a left frame thats still fragmentary: http://anserver1.eprsl.wustl.edu/navigator...e&prodView=prod -------------------- |

QUOTE (aldo12xu @ Sep 22 2005, 04:38 PM) These images are only available up to sols 365 (Spirit) and 360 (Oppy). So it'd have to be images of one of these sols. If it's a Navcam pan it should not take too long to get it done. Which sol would you like to have? I hope I can do it this weekend. Michael |

Thanks, Michael, that's great. I think the sol 312 Navcam images of Spirit leaving West Spur will make a cool panorama. Have fun with it!

Thank you Michael, very nice!
It seems the quality of the Navcams was really best around the time on West Spur... was it only because of clean air? I can't believe it hardly. When comes the same season for Spirit again (in sols?) -------------------- |
