Now that we know where we are going, I thought we could use a topic about our future route. I hope that a few images will get the rover rolling - downhill.

BACKGROUND
------
From Steve Squyres Misson Update
Octoberber 4, 2005

Extending eastward from the summit of Husband Hill is a broad ridge that we've named Haskin Ridge. It trends ENE from the summit, does a little dog-leg to the right, and then trends ESE for a bit. Right at the dog-leg there's a pretty steep step, which we're not certain we can get down. So we're going to descend the upper portion of the ridge, right to where the step is, and assess the situation. If we can see a safe route, then we'll continue down onto the lower portion of Haskin Ridge.
------

My Image of Haskin Ridge
I tried to get the best image of Haskin ridge that was available, and this is a crop from a true color TIFF summit panorama, located on the the Cornell Pancam web site. I converted the tif file to a gif file to save some download time. smile.gif

PS If you can't see the "steep step" that Squyres mentions - try this orbital image. I believe that the "steep step" is the dark shadow cutting across the ridge that is located directly under the word CRATER. I think that it is also visible in the true color pancam image, but it is less obvious.

Pancam really really forshortens the perspective. I have a Pancam Anaglyph that makes the area around Larrys Lookout look > 45 deg, when it's more like 10 smile.gif

Here's my attempt at that...

Note this was my first test using MichaelT's anti-vignetting software and its worked really well! I think that was the missing link in my image processing procedure.

Enjoy,

James

Great panoramas James and Alan! That really is an evocative image of the rover tracks going down such a steep looking slope.

Alan,

I really like the color balance of your latest panoramas !
Especially also your improved version of the inner basin pan that I only now discovered in the older posts of this thread !

Your colors (and also those of Nico's and of course vikingmar's pancam imagery) are a very good balance between the (in my opinion) overly ochre-monochromatic (but probably scientifically very accurat) and more artistically pleasing (but less accurate) colors !

Actually, when creating the synthetic colors for my own b/w navcam and hazcam images, what I am using as a "mental guideline" and example for
the "mood" of an emerging colorization has always been inspired by images like your's and (and Nico's, Marco's, Doug's, Vikingmars' and others ...)

Thanks for all the compliments.
I find this bright outcrop on the side of Husband hill interesting, it appears to be at roughly the same height as the one near the end of Haskin Ridge, could they be related?

Amazing, it almost looks like a vector field. Well, I guess it is a wind vector field!
And those wind patterns must be pretty persistent!
