Pretty ashtoning FREE application which shows all places on Earth ( for some countries, type the capital first and then scroll to the town of Your choice )
( e.g. I tried Pearl Harbor but the search didn't return the harbor so I tried Honolulu and found it ;-) ... - http://earth.google.com/ It's a 10 MegaBytes executable ... Fun to play with, especially as some US towns have a 3D feature The London Eye is also visible so it are recent Satellite photos ... Enjoy ! |

As for aviation nuts, I'm presuming you can't beat a good 'oul SR-71.

I find the application fascinating. I've been able to find all of the places I've lived for the past 20 years...
However, I recall that Mapquest used to offer a similar capability (though not with all the great features). You could get aerial photographs of most every place where Mapquest could draw a map. The aerial photos were removed due to a request from the Department of Homeland Security. Seems terrorists could use the aerial photos to plan air attacks a la 9/11/01. So, while I'm glad to see this kind of application out there, I'm a little surprised that it's as detailed and complete as it is. -the other Doug -------------------- “The trouble ain't that there is too many fools, but that the lightning ain't distributed right.” -Mark Twain

Google Earth is really an incredible application that I have used for all sorts of things. For example, when I was reading the book "Collapse" (by Jared Diamond) in which the disappearance of the Norse in Greenland is detailed (but no maps were provided), I was able to use Google Earth to zoom in on the fjords that the settlements were, which really helped me visualize how rough an environment that is.
Also, doing some genealogy recently, I found the farm that my ancestors owned in Donegal Ireland. The best feature about Google Earth is that you can "bookmark" any spot on the planet so you can come right back to it later. |

Upon closer examination I believe I can see evidence of flowing water in the recent past. There are also signs of active volcanism.

There is a new high-resolution map of Groom Lake (Area 51) where you can even see the markings on the runway, and the nuclear testing site west of that where the landscape is littered with nuclear blast craters. The resolution is simply astounding, especially in 3d with terrain maps turned on...
Also, the Grand Canyon is spectacular where you can literally zoom all the way in and view the rapids of the Colorado River. |

New at HowStuffWorks:
How Google Earth Works Online mapping programs are a godsend for those of us who get lost easily, and they're just plain fun for people who enjoy figuring out where stuff is. But Google Earth is no ordinary mapping application. Learn how to use Google Earth and find out why South Korea is demanding changes to the program. http://www.howstuffworks.com/google-earth.htm -------------------- "After having some business dealings with men, I am occasionally chagrined,
and feel as if I had done some wrong, and it is hard to forget the ugly circumstance. I see that such intercourse long continued would make one thoroughly prosaic, hard, and coarse. But the longest intercourse with Nature, though in her rudest moods, does not thus harden and make coarse. A hard, sensible man whom we liken to a rock is indeed much harder than a rock. From hard, coarse, insensible men with whom I have no sympathy, I go to commune with the rocks, whose hearts are comparatively soft." - Henry David Thoreau, November 15, 1853 |
